I had a crackly RHR speaker so decided to replace with some quality rear door speakers. I chose some 6.5" Alpine DDL RT17C 40 watt RMS. I looked around for the lowest RMS in a quality speaker and this is what the sales guy recommended for a stock replacement system. These speakers have a RRP of $299 but got them for $199 pair.

My conclusion: I am no expert but the stock speakers are pretty good. The Alpines may give slight better clarity but give less volume due to the mismatch in deck output.

If thinking about just a speaker upgrade in the Premium stereo I reckon dont waste your time and money. But I did get rid of the crackle but would have been easier just to buy a Ford replacement speaker.

Two things -

Are you sure you aren't just letting the sound of the standard fronts disappoint you regarding the new speakers? Ford factory stuff is sh*t.

In saying that, the ICC is also sh*t but adding quality speakers does help it along somewhat.

The fact they are quiter has nothing to do with being mismatched, they are a 4 ohm speaker (as most are) they just may be less sensitive than the stockers.

I suggest you now replace the front splits with something decent. Rear's are for fill only really - you don't got to a concert or cinema and have your back facing the stage.

I would also have suggested proper mounting rings and a bit of dynamat would have helped them along a bit too.

Yep I put Alpine Type "S" splits in the front doors and Polk audio 2 way coaxials in the rear doors of my FG F6, also dynamatted the doors and the sound is much much better than what was coming from the stock "premium" Ford/FPV speakers.

Oh and I have also fully dynamatted the rear parcel shelf and boot area plus changed the stock "farting" 8" sub for a Kenwood 8" sub on the parcel shelf... This too has made a big difference to the factory sound... Although its not ear splittingly loud it is at least listenable now compared to stock.

May upgrade to a decent amp for the splits and sub oneday but for now the stock headunit and sub amp are doing ok.

My mates base model Camry work car has better audio than the "Premium" setup in my car. It really is a joke.

Have you done the wire switch change on the sub?

Doing that actually makes it sound a bit better as the sub doesnt just sound like a wet fart like it does from factory.

Yes I did the sub wire switch a while back and that was a big improvement.

I am not a real audio buff, but I did an install many years ago with a head unit with preouts and a high quality amp and the amp made the biggest positive difference. Those new 40RMS speakers really need a decent amp but you cant properly put an amp in the FG.

I have previously experiemented with using the "speaker line out converter" thingo where you use the speaker out into amp and there was heaps of noise and quality crap so I would never do this on the FG. The noise would drive me batty, just like the crackly faulty speaker was.

I can understand why guys just put a second deck in with preouts.

And whilst dynamat makes a big difference, I am just getting too old and time restrained for that.

So for what it is I reckon the premium FG setup with stock speakers is pretty good. I think I made it worse by putting the 40 watt rms speakers in.

Mines fine with the higher watt speakers in it... It all comes down to there sensitivity (the polks are a 92db speaker, whilst the alpines are 88db).

Ive found if I fade to the front 3 clicks from the middle/centre position its sounds quite good with the mix of speakers I have installed.

Maybe try something like that.

I had to do the same thing as smackers when I replaced my front speakers due to the lower sensitivity.

If the balance was set in the centre the rear speakers would over power the fronts so I just adjusted it forward a little and it sounds much better.
