probably... by just getting too low and allowing the piston to push out too far which stretched and made the dust boot fail at it's full length and that allowed dust into the piston which caused it to sieze?

exactamundo, plus less pad material = more heat transfer to the piston/boot/seals and resulting in the above.

There a reason why a "worn out" pad still has 3 to 5mm or material left.

fair dinkum... I've changed pads with less meat on them without issue... perhaps I was just lucky on those occasions.

In this pic it looks like the top of the disc isn't flush with the top of the pad? That patch of rotor that's not seeing any pad action is weird?

that's as far down as it goes...

that pic is of the passenger side, the pic above it in my post is the driver side (the one that had the piston failure) and they both seem to have the same amount of disc usage percentage

so after collie a few weeks ago, I developed the dreaded flex plate rattle, (not bad for 180k) so it was out with the box and time for an upgrade. it was time to take the turbo off as well and upgrade the wastegate.

so after pulling the car apart I found a few things that needed attention, Flex plate needed to be replaced, gearbox rubber mount had sheered in half, turbo had something go through it, two studs were missing to the manifold, and the exhaust housing bolts were all loose.

So I got the new flex plate reinforced and ordered a new mount for the gearbox, a good mate came to the rescue with a good condition stock turbo so that was pulled apart and mr wiggum set it up with a ported rear housing and Turbosmart 12lb actuator. (Thanks again mate)

So it all went back together albeit a few hiccups (my fault rushing things) but it seems to be running sweet now. Ill put a few kms on it to make sure everything is all good, then it will get a retune.

I didn't do much exciting to my car today. I found the fouled plug and tried to revive it but no luck so I chucked a spare in and all was good again.
