AF means across the flats.

It's commonly used when referring to Imperial sizes to distinguish between UNC/F and Whitworth spanners/sockets.

Therefore a 19mm is not an imperial measurement. As A/F (or Across Flat) is a designation for imperial measurements, hence it's impossible to have a 19mm AF (using traditional naming conventions). Of course, it's possible to say it that way, but it just seems wrong :)

This handy link can clear it up for those who don't know what I (or SHP) mean.

I didn't say it was imperial, just it is commonly used for imperial. I also said why it is more commonly used for imperial.

My first post was to point out that the links were both for 19mm, not 21 as you said.

I always use AF when referring to hex size, then I get the right size hex. Not a 16.45 or a 21.94 (for 19mm) if the apprentice is a bit thick.

I have a set. The 21mm socket fits, the 19mm does not... coincidence?

This poses an interesting conundrum.

sort of, they have a double hex drive, both imperial sizes. One is 3/4 which is why the 19mm is a good fit, the other is 13/16 - a 21 mm socket will fit because it is larger than 13/16. A deep 21mm socket will do the job but it is .36mm (0.014") too big and will round off eventually

I'm saying that the 19mm (deep socket, admittedly I never attempted it with a smaller socket) does NOT fit around the key to my wheel nuts. My 21mm deep socket does fit, of course. Quite snugly. Perhaps I got a different key/drive with my purchase.. ?

My 20mm socket might fit if I bashed it on with a hammer, but even then, it's unlikely.
