It's already close to its limits, it's possible to

Use a 255. Any more and it just won't be safe.

are we likely to run into any problems with insurance if the tyre is "too wide for the rim" and we have a bingle?

Im sure if it caused the accident then yes.

Do you really want to be in the accident on the first place?

Isn't wider rubber meant to be safer so why would your insurance punish you for "being safer"

245 is the widest you can legally go on 8" wide rim.. A wider tyre say 275 on a 8" wide rim would not have full surface contact with the road... It would ballon out and also run the risk of the tyre coming off... This is why if you want bigger rubber on the rear, you also need wider rims to suit..

Just get a good quality 245 tyre if you want to stick with your current rims

Agree... Although 245 isn't the widest you can fit on an 8 in rim... If you go to a smaller diameter rim you could run a 265 (ie. 15 inch) with no probs...

But on a 19 inch... There's no sidewall... So it's not even worth trying...
