Doesn't happen so often these days, but it was one of the first things I noticed when I picked it up.

I posted a similar query about it 4 weeks ago and got lots off feedback, may be worth a search. Sometimes feels like there is a dead body in the boot and generally happens under normal/gentle driving and when coming to a halt - The dealer has not been able to simulate it but that's partly coz they use it as an opportunity to thrash the thing and with the auto tranny and diff all wound up in the same direction you dont get it!. Still havent worked out wether all BA's do it (would be particularly unacceptable in a fairmont Ghia) or if it is specifically something to do with the Turbo's LSD, as I've never driven another BA. Give them a *hard* wiggle in various directions. Ive solved other people's (and once my own) clunking problems by checking these. The fact that it happened when braking or accelerating (depenging) made me think it was related to suspension or diff, when in fact it wasnt...just the weight change causing things to shift a cm and hit something else. I do also have a bit of a clunk from my diff now and then..nothing bad yet thank God.

I would suggest that you check the spare wheel cover. It is a timber arrangement that sits on top of your spare that if you don't get it sitting spot on, it will move around and clunk. I am speaking from experience.

If usually happens when the power to the diff is backed off.. Although I don't get it much these days as I have got used to driving the BA. I hope it is not a design fault with the LSD.... My Mechanic said that the LSD's on the BA's he had seen looked like they had really bad backlash, but ford checked it out and said it was well with in limits... I'm not to impressed with the LSD diffs in general... What does everyone else think about them?

Guest PaulM Guests Posted 22/12/03 10:19 AM Share Posted 22/12/03 10:19 AM Very good point Mick, one that made me feel a tad foolish. Just been out in the wind and rain and checked that every thing is strapped in nice and tight.
cqae Member 229 Member For: 21y 1m 29d Posted 24/12/03 02:55 AM Share Posted 24/12/03 02:55 AM another tihng to check might be your tow bar. Mine rattled its head off for a few weeks but it sounded quite lod & solid, almost like a suspension component lose or worn. The pin that hold my tow bar goose neck in lets it ratte around. I fixed it by drilling & tapping a thread in the tow bar support & putting a bolt in there to clamp the goose neck into the support, about 10 minutes of work & no rattle anymore!
