for the op yeh for sure, iam just commenting on the nulon oil and how/why I dont like it

Atomic highly recommend running Nulon 15w - 50 Street and track performance, they said there was no signs of any bearing wear after pulling down an engine.

What causes oil to darken so quickly? Running rich?

All of what has been advised apply, but it would also indicate blow-by as this means some of the combustion excapes past the pistons into the cranckcase, which adds to the polution load and also cause the oil to be burnt slightly on every combustion.

Some years ago when I broke the ring lands on one of my pistons, the oil was pretty much destroyed within 1000k's (car still drove OK just a bit 'lumpy' at idle), pitch black and smelled awful.

heres a interesting one and also re affirms my out look on nulon

I usually use fuch titan gto 15/40 full syn change every 5 though on the dot by the time 5 thou is up it has just started to go from honey to a tinged honey, after all the hype of the nulon crap I thought id give it ago.............never again I say after 2.5 thou its very discoloured to the point where iam going to change it. fg f6 130,000kms. iam so meticulas withmy servicing and the nulon stuff just hasnt rated in my book, even to the oint where the enging oil temp seems to stay hotter longer when giving it a hard time in comparison to the fuch stuff.

this is just my 2c though

Fuchs actually recommend the Titan supersyn in the turbo falcons.

I remember this distinctly because my boss said put gto in it. I asked him at smoko "I thought the turbo model would need a better quality oil" he checked and sure enough the car came back in that arvo for new oil and filter lol!

with a service history like that it would have been awesome to have done oil sampling from day one.

I tore down a 300000km VN V6 engine where the camshaft lobes were completely worn. THe engine only ever used good synthetics and never thrashed.

I never expected this in this engine but I am beginning to think that the reduction in zinc in current engine oils is not only affecting flat tappet lifter engines but also some roller cam lifters designs like those on the VN.

So now I am only going to use a Racing Spec oil because it does not have to use the lower spec Zinc like the street oil does.

I think the roller cam design in the BA-FG is such that the low zinc oil is OK but I still prefer the higher ZDDT levels that racing oils provide.
