Steering Shudder Under Braking - Intermittent

Hey guys, have a BF XR6T, 2005 model done 60,000kms. It has the usuall gearbox whines etc, however the other weekend I took it away on a trip, and when braking from overtaking cars I noticed a considerable shudder in the steering wheel under braking. It was very intermittent, sometimes noticeable at lower speeds, but predominantly higher ones.

So my first thought is that it is brake rotors are warped, however being so intermittent I am now unsure if it actually is.

Next thought was wheel bearings, as I was starting to notice a mechanical clunk occasionally trasnferred through the steering wheel. However I am not hearing any sound, and I jacked up my car and gave the wheel a wiggle and its very tight, no movement.

DOes anyone have an idea of what it could be? a guy around the office thinks it might be a control arm issue, or maybe bushes. How would I check something like that? I am planning on taking it to a suspension place and getting them to do a full suspension check so I know the condition of the car, as I have only owned it for about 2 months (3,000 kms)

The bloke at your office is probably right and the bushes in the front lower control arm are probably stuffed. The symptoms on my car were similar also but way worse after another 500km's and a worn set of tyres!

Welcome to the BF world. It could be what you have mentioned. that's control arm bushes going and also warped disc's. These vehicles are notorious for this. I had my disc's machined which helped. However, as strange as it may be, I actually ground the brake shields (came with them from factory) down so as they were only the size of the hub and wella, shudder is now a distant memory. Also, now I don't have trouble taking the wheels off.

Riteo, I'll see if my local suspension place can check out the bushes. I dont actually know what im looking at with suspension. An engine im ok with, but suspension befuddles me as it's never been explained to me and I havent researched it properly yet lol.

Had this exact issue with my BA MkII ute mate. Turned out to be my discs. Replaced them the first time and it came back a few months later. Got them machined after that and didnt have any issues after that. As Impellor said, they are notorious for this. Id probably start with the brakes first.
