I do not recommend using a space saver I have a 2007 xr6 turbo both times I have used the space saver it has caused a fire something to do with the skid traction computer thinking that one wheel is going too fast or something my latest fire was today after putting a space saver on, I don't think ford should issue these space savers when they cause fires its very scary

a bit more info could be helpful if that's why you have joined to warn people.

Where was the fire?

what road speeds were you doing?

How long had you driven on it for?

etc etc

First time I had my two children in the car got a fat on the way to school a month ago the garage put my space saver on within bout three ks we were on fire the local mechanics said they hadn't seen anything like it it was so hot it changed the colour of the iron underneath to a particular colour that meant it was really really hot it burnt out all my breaks completely melted them. I don't know a lot about cars, and this morning when I got a flatly the tyre service company came out changed it I drove about one k and was on fire again luckily my friend was following me and tooted for me to pull over, I am a mum and my two children are too frightened to go in the car anymore.

I don't even know what power skids are but I was only doing fourty k an hour

Do you know where abouts the fire started? Was it to do with the brakes or something else.

I know plenty of people that have used their spare and I've never heard of anything like this.

That was just a joke Theresa. Disregard that comment.

Plus ++++++++ it sounds like the space saver doesn't fit over your brakes. May have been added by someone without taking any notice of the size of the brakes after realising the car had no spare

Apparently it's the space saver and something to do with the cars computer skid traction getting confused because one wheel is going faster than the other so it try's to brake on the space saver, I have had it towed to Avon city ford in Christchurch to see what the problem is although they said over the phone it will be the space saver I do have twenty inch mags on but space savers are meant to handle twenty five inch mags.....but I just don't see why they issue them if they give the computer system in the skid traction grief enough to cause fire

I was thinking its dragging on the brake caliper but paullie beat me to it.

There is no chance of the computer causing the fire.

There is more of a chance that you ran over a smoking elephant.

Twice

**the traction control gives up trying to correct it and triggers a fault.

That's interesting Paulie maybe that is the reason although I bought the car off the Forman at Avon city ford I'd hope he'd know if he had the wrong space saver for the car it's been to two garages insurance company assessors who took it to a break place and no one has suggested that that could be the problem but thanks il mention it to Avon city ford to check it out, I just want to know my car won't go on fire for a third time as its doing my head in lol
