I have done over 120,000km in my FG running over 400rwks n Nulon has been great, mine is a gold brown at 7500km when I change mine and I also use a K&N oil filter

After 40K using Mobil 1, insides of my engine still sparkling clean with 7500km service interval.

Maybe better to stick with what you know as engine oil is heaps cheaper than another engine!!

Oil is a difficult one. I don't think that because it's dark it is neccessarily a bad thing but from what I could see it does not stand up to heat very well, it made me wonder what it would have been like if I thrashed the car or drove it hard, maybe chugging around at the speed limit works it harder, as Spoolax said he has had no problems with Nulon. Personally I would rather see it all nice and clean under the rocker cover because if it has a burnt coating so do lots of other places in the motor.

Two things I have noticed since the flush and change is firstly the turbo wind down bearing noise is a lot quieter, and secondly the car had an intermittant squeaky sound at idle that was similiar to a quiet belt squeal but was coming from low down at the rear of the engine and now that has gone, that may just be a coincidence, but the turbo wind down noise isn't. IMHO I think a good quality 0w 40 such as Mobil 1 or Castrol is a better option. It may cost more but in the end you get what you pay for.

ZF's aren't cheap to rebuild, Shame to compromise service life and performance just to save a few bucks..

Maybe safer to stick to something that works well and is known to not cause any issues?

I use nulon long life 5w-40, had no problems with it.

Are any trans fluids actually approved by the transmission manufacturer, or do they just have to meet the relevant specs??

I don't see why they would approve or admit another companies cheaper fluid is fine to use when they have the majority of the market convinced they have to use their fluid.

I put an universal trans fluid in a Expensive Daewoo 4sp auto. It does do some little weird things that it never did before. Will be changing back to the Expensive Daewoo recommended fluid. Universal fluids can do the job, but you might get the thing I had. It works fine but its not quite 100%.
