Engine Break In Process

Hey guys, My names Michael, I have posted a separate thread about my FGMKII XR6 Turbo that I just bought in the same section, currently am loving it, just wanted to clarify if possible the correct way to run the engine in, I have heard many many different ways and just wanted to know what everyone here would recommend.

Currently has 550 km done, and I drive it lightly through the gears (no highway driving yet), then after an hour or so, I give it WOT to 3k then shift, then repeat, I do this for say 2nd 3rd 4th but do not go over 3000rpm. Some people say from the get go drive it like u stole it, but then some say don't go over 4k for the first 800km then slowly progress, some also say load it up, high gears, low revs <2000rpm, but I have NFI which one is the correct way!

Anyone care to shed some light?

Not sure exactly what the go is with turbo's and if its any different, but my old man got a BF GTP and it went to Herrod straight from the factory and they flogged it non-stop all day on the dyno and I can't imagine them doing that if they were worried something would go wrong. Not sure if that's of too much help given your in a turbo but I'd say you should be able to give it to it from the word go. Im sure other guys will be able to offer a bit more info though

Everyone has a different opinion. When my old man got his XR8 from Ford they told him to take it easy for the 1st 1500km or so.

I've built motors in the past and ran them in on the dyno with no problems.

Seriously though, I have always run my new vehicles (Bikes, NA cars, Turbo Car) in the same way, as per the article below....

Flog it, aren't they all run in at the factory anyway?

I drove mine like I stole it from day 1 no problems so far and I'm up to 11,000km

Not any more apparently. They get a quick run to make sure they are working.

Do the oil change early.

I would have @ 500k's

Then I would have upped the revs. Taking time. See 4,000 and ease off. Bring it up to 5 so forth then dump the oil and Filter this time @1,000

Then every five thou or six months.

Main thing is don't put much load on the bottom end for about the first fifteen hundred. ease the power on and don't slug the motor along in to high a gear.

Ease the brakes in as well and change the crappy brake fluid to something decent as soonas you can.

They are a legendary motor and they have great reliability. So if they are going to blow they are going to blow no matter what you do.

Try to avoid highway steady revs for too long in first 1000km anD avoid idling too long. Varying load is best. Don't rev to high. 4000 would be acceptable.

Then dump the mineral oil and put fresh semi syn or full syn in an drive how ever you like.

I ran my car in hard, and when I got it dyno'd- it made over 20rwkw more than other FG turbos on the same dyno in similar conditions.

Exactly what I've been told and tell others. Just worded better haha.

Old man ran in new territory turbo diesel that way and can't beat the economy. Compares to other managers at ford plants he goes to and is on top for best. Will only get better as its still under 5000km
