I had the same thing a few years ago with a built engine mind you, we swore black & blue it was in the head & its turned out to be bearing issues & piston rock in the bore. Id start with the simple things, compression & leak down tests, while ya plugs are out check for any abnormal markings on the pistons & bore ( easier if you have a camera to do the job even drop ya oil to see if theres any bearing matter in there. pull ya tappet cover off & check ya tappets & valve train for anything/something. Next step is head off & have a better look & start measuring things to see if something is bent. Its not a good feeling not knowing but it'll show its head one way or another

Been reading it's not that hard really.

He went to start it and got a really slow crank.Anyway he got it running but with a knock in the motor <bent rod>. After a while the noise went away and he boosted it like he always did.Whent for 6 months till on a cruise trip home at 110kph it dropped the lot when the rod fatigued enough from being bent and smashed through the lifter gallery and holed the sump. Noises can go but it does not mean the problem has . Edited 25/04/12 08:38 PM by JVK
