Always wondered if ute and sedan had same centre.

G6ET is m86, which would make it the only open centre m86 in the lineup I believe. Only N/A's have the m80

Got under the car to look at the diff apparently the M86 should have 8R 29C on the tag and the M80 should have 8R 29C imagine my surprise to find mine says 051016PA Ratio 2.73 S/N 001766, and nothing else rang Ford and they could not help, anyone understand this?

He has not been on here since 2018, so you might not be getting an answer from him.

I am planning on fitting an LSD center to my G6ET.

I have bought a cradle, to swap the torsen LSD centre into, but it is at a mates storage place.  It also looks like I will be having a go a rebuilding a BA wagon diff first - so good practice before the G6ET gets done.

I think that installing the LSD centre should be pretty straightforward.

If the pinion bearings are being left alone, It looks like you just need to make sure that the side to side adjusters have the right preload on the crown wheel carrier bearings and the crown wheel is moved across to have the same clearance/play between the crown wheel and the pinion gear.

There are a few videos on diff building showing measuring preload using a scale to see how much force is needed to get the diff to move.  Try "Andy mechanic" on youtube,  There is also a bloke in Tasmania who has done a good rebuild guide on the M86.

If your diff is ok before you dismantle it, check how much force it takes to move using the scale before you dismantle, then make sure it is the same after rebuilding.

Same goes for play between the pinion and crown wheel.

Videos show using a stand and dial indicator to measure an actual amount of clearance, but if you are just wanting to make it the same as before, then a simple pointer and a marked starting and ending point for the movement of the pointer on a piece of cardboard should be enough - just make sure you have the same amount of movement of the pointer when you finish as you did before you started.

I have not done a Ford diff, but many years ago, took a Torana banjo diff apart for the spider gears to be welded up, then reassembled it.  That had similar side to side adjusters as the M86.  I only did it all by feel - as in "clearance feels the same" and "preload/difficulty to turn feels the same" and it was perfect and ended up doing a lot of kilometers.

I put the standard LSD (same as the XR6) in purely for grip, I was in a situation that I couldn't accelerate out of as the road was slightly wet and I was towing a 6x4 trailer, power to 1 wheel is useless with all that torque.

How did you find the upgrade to the LSD over the standard G6E diff?

I have been pretty impressed with the grip of my G6E turbo given that they do not have an LSD, but I am installing one as I expect it to be better again.
