Hey guys,

I'm still relatively new to fordxr6turbo.com, but been around cars since I was a young fella. Just thought I'd put this up to shed some light on things I've been experimenting with in my 2004 XR6T.

I've had 5 different cars in the 5 years I've had my license, and all of them have had big sound systems. Two of my cars had compition grade stuff and won a few sound off's up here in Townsville.

Now that I have an XR6T, I was keen to see what I could do with it sound wise. I bought it for practicality, so it had to be loud, but still able to put a suit case in the boot. I installed a crappy 4 channel Cadance amp, running 75watts rms each speaker, powering focal 5x7's all round. I was impressed with how well this combination has work for me. I was running 2 x 12inch cheap subs at 200 watts rms each. But the low end couldnt keep up with the mid's and high's, so a change was in order.

Last weekend I purchased an Alpine type R 12 inch DVC 4ohm, and an Alpine PDX-M6. I've had alot of experience with Alpine gear, which is why I chose this combo. I then did a bit of research and designed a box to suit it, and the space under the parcel shelf in the boot, then set out constructing it. Many people said that a single 12 inch would not be enough for a Falcon, but after hearing it running 600 watts rms each voicecoil, in a custom made box, I can easily dis-regaurd all those comments. Its great to have so much bass at my finger tips again and I would recommend this set up to anyone.

Cheers for reading and I will try and post some pics when I get the time.

Hey mate I'm really keen to see some pics..

Ive had my system in my car since I bought it (few years now) and its a mess. It was a wicked setup in the VS I had but obviously the box isn't a good fit in the xr. Im running 2 alpine type R subs in a custom box (made to fit a VS) off a 1000wrms alpine amp, 4ch alpine amp, still std speakers and a alpine head unit and a 2 farad cap. Cant really fit anything in the boot as the box won't go flush up against the back seats.

I was looking at this box, but am not sure how it would sound as others have said that the box would be too small and the quality etc... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EMPTY-Ford-FPV-BA-BF-FG-Falcon-xr6-xr8-12inch-sub-subwoofer-box-/160728067810?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item256c23aee2#ht_4335wt_1413

Here's some pics for you mate.

It doesnt sit all the way back to the seats due to the minimum size of the sub is 320mm, and there aint that much space provided. The amps are on the side of the box for easy removal if I wanna take it down the track or something. I'm yet to make a beauty board to hide all the ugly stuff, but this is the best I could do with the space I had. The box is to Alpine recommended specs and really does sound amazing. I dont know how well you could get two type r's to fit with the proper box.

My advice, just wing it bro. If you can make something with 3.8 cubic feet with a port displacement of .48 cubic feet, would be perfect, but its gonna take alot of space. Just make a box as big as you can with the space you're willing to sacrifice and go from there.

P.S, I used to have the exact same speaker set up as you, but in a corolla sedan, and that's what I used to win my first sound off !!!

Yeah mine sits about the same as yours, but with 2 subs, there aint much room for anything else...

Think I might give that mob from the link I provided a go, I've been to there Facebook page and there website and there work doesn't look too bad. On FB they say that the box from the link is $199, so I think I can sacrifice some sound quality for more boot space. They have said on FB that they have fitted 2 alpine type'r subs in no worries and that the "boxes are strong and made with 18mm MDF" is that 'strong'? Only thing is I want my subs to face the cabin, as I prefer not to draw too much attention to myself whilst still being able to crank it up fairly high in the car..

18mm will be fine. I used 16mm on that box and it seems to be good. Would have gone thicker if I could have though. I also had 45mm screws every 3 inches and liqued nailed the sh*t outta it too. The subs will probably fit, but wouldnt suit. Another thing to keep in mind is that you're looking at a sealed box which will make you lose even more volume. From my experience's, the music and bass sounds better when faced away from the cabin. I can't comment too much on that box though cause I dont know the specs and I've only ever made ported boxes. But for $199, its cheap enough to experiment with. Goodluck and let me know how it goes !!!

That Bayside mob seem a bit suss, and they offer no specs on any of their box designs, even when contacted they are of no help. Few people on here have asked them now and got nowhere.

If they knew what they were doing, you'd think how many liters and is it single or double chamber would be an easy question to answer.

Some photos of the box out of the car would be good, and perhaps before its been covered in carpet.

Looks good and practical, but you'd need a sub that performs well in a small box. Hence why I asked them for some specs so I could see if I could find some decent subs for it.

Love your box design. Did you tune the reflex ports to the sub or just go for it?

It looks like you seem to have a clue about getting more SPL out of a sub compared to some other jobs I have seen.

Cheers Paulie. And I'll try get some more pics for you Dave.

I didnt have the space to use the recommended port for this sub, so I improvised by splitting it over two ports and its worked quite well. I've previously had 2 type R's each in their own box's made from alpine, and I wouldnt know the difference if their box and my box were play side by side. Volume and quality of sound are almost identical. I've made a few box's in my time experimenting. I made a box for my old JZA80 Supra that worked out really well and also for a sound system in a boat. The more I do, the better I get and I'm really stoked as to how this one has turned out. Just wish I had more room so it would slide all the way back, lol.

I used to make speaker boxes for a living. I'm using a single blaupunkt vpc300 competition 12 inch sub getting 1000wrms each coil.

Perfect for my taste. Crisp, punchy and deep. Unfortunately it runs out of legs when the volume is it ear splitting level and the mid and high stage start taking over.

But having that said that's all conpetition stuff also so it outweighs it a little bit. I can put pics up tonight if anyone wanted a look? Think I got a couple of the box build aswell.
