Turbo Noise

I am a first time xr6T owner and have recently had the turbo in my FG replaced under warranty (65k kms) It still had plenty of power but was whining obtrusively on light to medium boost. I was told by an independent turbo specialist that the original turbo was "out of balance".

Well, the new turbo makes the same noise when it is "spooling", just not quite as loud. Is this normal for it to be heard clearly inside and outside the cabin?

Additionally, there is now another noise especially when the motor is still warming up. When the turbo turbo kicks in on light to medium throttle, a grating type noise, similar to static on a radio that is not tuned in, can easily be heard inside the cabin. I'm not sure if it is the turbo, but it is related because it only happens when the turbo is boosting. It just doesn't sound right!

Does any of this make sense? I may be a bit pedantic, but if anyone has experienced this themselves or has any suggestions, please let me know.

Hi, mclaws. I too had the same problem with mine, I have a 2010 g6e turbo and had it replaced at 10 000kms. Was told that a bearing had failed it too was making a loud spooling sound and grating noise, how ever once it was replaced there was no sound at all. Except when you put your foot right into it. So it may be a good idea to get it checked again.

What type of oil are you using?

I've found different brands make different noises. I recommend Royal Purple 10W 40, but you will get a million other opinions.

Also have the turbo oil line filter replaced/cleaned or changed to a braided line with an Earl's filter or similar.

Is everythijng stock on the car?

Inlet air pipe to the turbo can make noise if changed to metal one

The air filter can also make more noise (affect spool sound) if not stock.

If all fails, have it checked by these guys if out of warranty.

I have only had the car for 2 months. Prior to that it has always been serviced at Ford so I guess whatever the standard oil they would use is in it.

They replaced the oil feed filter when they did the turbo.

Everything is stock on the car.

Theres your problem there bud ford are friggin hopeless the amount of problems I had geez

1. Drained my coolant but never filled it back up

2. I had a oil leak they claimed they fixed it to only find it leaked 3 times as bad

3. Broke my indicator handle off and had to order me a new one

4. Door trim fell apart they ordered me in a new one they found it had the same flaw as the one they replaced but installed anyway.

5. Some how broke my idle pullie car by allowing water to get into my engine bay when it rained/

6. I had a massive knocking noise in the rear end they claimed fixed after going back 5 times they claimed it was normal operation. I took it to another non ford mechanic in 2 mins they found the problem diff bushes split ford finally fixed

7. List goes on and on and on I think I spent more time at ford than on the road.

STEER CLEAR OF FORD SERVICE

I second Ronski on ford service being crap. When I bought my fg it had a few problems I got fixed through warranty.

It had a strange whining noise coming from the turbo, and there was a massive bang that was coming from the rear

end when you changed gears while giving it the balls. Among other less important things, ford said there was nothing

wrong with the car, so I went to another mechanic to get them to find what was wrong so I could take it back to ford

and get them to fix it through warranty!
