G'day,

Just got a late 2009 fg xr6t ute and loving it! But the brakes are puss! One big brake and they shudder and fade, these cars are so underbraked it is scary!

Anyway I like to be able to stop, with the amount of power these things have, what are the best options to fit inside my 18" rims? The DBA 4000 sounds ok, but can they really handle some good braking? Also any probs with abs/warranty? I gather that the rears don't do much work?

Experience and any advice would be great!

Cheers

There are any number of options as alternatives.

Usually, its the Ford Rotor that creates the shuddering.

The alternatives depend on how far you want to go.

I can highly recommend 'V- Sport' at Arndell Park.

Phone John on 02.96798644 or 0407.012891.

Just tell him what level you want to go to.

OOPS!

I have never heard of anyone having Warranty issues with the ABS because they upgraded their Brakes.

The Bias on Brakes front to back does mean the Fronts work harder than the Back Brakes, but good back Brakes do count.

It is up to you to figure out what level you want to go to.

Thanks for that, I will give them a call. I am not so much worried about the warranty but more about upsetting the ABS, DSC etc due to changing the diameter of the rotors from standard, does it still work the same way? I imagine the sensor is in the same position, however the wheel rotation speed is different. I am no mechanic but tell me if I am wrong.

Anyway, you reckon it is the Ford rotor that causes the heat shudder? (goes away when they cool down). I guess I want brakes that I can do so 'spirited' driving through some hilly country and not notice any huge difference. It doesn't bother me if they get hot, just if they fade or shudder!! Wouldnt mind to be able to do a few track days without worrying about brakes. Am I going to have to go to bigger wheels and Brembos? I guess I would prefer not to yet! Not enough brass and I actually like the 18 inch rims at the moment.

So what brand and type of disc, are the factory calipers good enough? I imagine the back brakes would hardly be doing much work so I am really not worried about them at this stage, maybe upgrade to Territory discs, other than that... what about good pads?

Limited budget, 18inch rims, best disc and brake pads within reason... how much, and will they do what I want them to?!

By the way, loving this car 70-200km/h is insane for a factory vehicle!

Just ring V-Sport and have a chat about where you want to go.

- Very helpful and not at all pushy.

If these Guys can't help you, no one can.

They are the AP Guys in Sydney and supply Track,Rally and Street Brakes to all sorts of Cars, incl. mine.

My Car is there now.

just want someone to clarify that the fg turbo sedan have a 322mm front rotor and rear 328mm???

Early FGXR6T's like mine came with a solid rear disc. Later ones had dual ventilated

322mm front 303mm rear from memory.

Easy upgrade on the rear to 328mm slotted rears Ford Territory upgrade available for 2008 FG's.

I recommend Matt at race Brakes Sydney.

If you're brakes are only holding up for one stop, sounds like the fluid is fried. Change it to a decent DOT 5.1. AP Racing is good.

In order of performance/budget look at these.

- With standard front calipers use Slotted DBA 4000 rotors and Ferodo DS2500 pads fronts or just about any pad aftermarket will be better than stock.

- Next step up is big in price and performance as it requires a wheel change too. Stock Ford FG rims don't clear Brembos.

Decide on wheels first below.

http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11310061

- 4 pot Brembos fronts. DBA4000 slotted 355mm rotors. Will solve your problems.

- 6 pots sometimes make weird noises.

Next step up would be AP 6 pot calipers but pricey.

Other options are Harrop and PBR big brake kits. Check wheel clearance though.
