Well, I'll start at the beginning.

When I was at the drags the other week my engine developed a rattly, grindy, tapping noise which seemed to go away after a while. I thought because the trans went into second and stayed there with my foot flat to the floor until the engine over revved and cut out that I might have done some damage. I checked the boost log and I had hit 20psi :o icon_eek.gif so thought I might have bent a rod or two or goosed the oil pump. So I pulled the motor out Thursday and guess what? The flex plate had come loose icon_biggrin.png:biggrin:. There were four bolts that hold it to the crank sitting under the torque converter and the last two were finger tight and next to each other. So Friday I put an NA motor in that was lying around and fitted the original actuator back in with minimum boost for now. Checked out the rods in the motor that came out and they all look good, so it looks like the new Spool rods I ordered aren't really needed although I will put them in anyway with the help of the young fella so he can see how an engine works inside.

I have noticed with the NA motor that the mileage seems better and it's sharper off the mark, although a bit sluggish up top with the boost backed right off. Once the 'Spool' rods are in the turbo motor I'll pump up the boost on the NA and see what it will do icon_smile.gif.

I was thinking about dropping the change point in the gearbox by about 500rpm and cranking up the boost to about 18psi since it seems to be revs that these motors aren't really designed for. The Spool rods are supposed to be good for over 1,100hp.

I think I like driving the car how it is for now.

Does anyone know what boost the NA can handle without detonating and what other problems might arise?

has the same rods as the ba motor that you just pulled out but more compression. Different valves, not inconel so they can't handle extra heat.

once you have the other motor ready to drop in, wind up the NA motor and have some fun

Would be nice to wind it up but I can't risk putting shrapnel through the turbo.

Just using the stock pistons. I wish I could afford to do the lot while it's out but I have a family and a mortgage.

I have a pretty safe tune which has seen 420wkw without detonation so I'll just feed it a little more boost and keep the revs moderate once the rebuilt turbo motor is back in.

My mate has been racing an old 3.8 commonwhore running about 8psi boost in an NA for some time now and that chugs along. I'll work my way up to about there boost-wise and see what happens.

I'm actually liking the low down performance and response of the turbo'd NA for now. Sounds better too.

Its amazing what a little extra compression can do for throttle responce and fuel economy.Keep up the good work Rip.

I hit 10psi earlier today (according to the boost logger) with no adverse affects. Fried up a little too easy :)

I guess you could run the higher compression motor with more boost with a blended ethanol fuel without risk of detonation?

Oh yeah, I forgot all about them. They seem ok so far but I've only done a few short skids. I'll be taking it fairly easy on the NA motor until I get the new turbo one finished.

The last tune we put in it is fairly safe. No detonation up to 420rwkw on the dyno with all the listening gear. Running the Profec B2 boost controller too and all the same injectors etc with the same piping so I don't see why the afr's would have changed much.

The new one will have the BF cams and springs and the spool rods so it should be fairly tuff :)

Hey mate im really curious about this rebuild your doing. I may head down a similar path later on.

The spool rods your bought. Did they come with gudgeon pins and big end bearings etc?

You going to get your crank freshened up? new main bearings, grind etc?

I assume your gonna put in headstuds and gaskets and all that junk?

You gonna freshen up the bores and do the rings aswell?

If you dont want to answere any of that its all good, Im just curious.
