Hey guys, just wanted everyones opinion on this, I have been browsing the forums for a while now and noticed most engine failures (not including dodgy fuel/tune/lack of surge tank) are caused by oil pump gears, or the timing chain jumping a tooth or two due to worn guides.

So my question is, before I start modding, should I replace these two parts as a safe measure and then rest easy with a reliable engine, or just mod it until it dies then build with stronger everything?

This is regarding a bf mk11 f6 engine, and my aims are 400 rwkw on e85 with all the usual quality bolt ons . I have read plenty of people doing this on a standard bottom end and the bottom end has held up well for a lot of people

thoughts?

ive been contemplating the same.

Id like to do timing chain, cam gears, chain guide and oil pump before I crack the 300.

until then im happy with 270 haha

ask yourself do you have the money to fix it if it goes bang and can you afford to not have a car for worste case a few months...

The kicker is most of the time it's an engine out job to do it all and while the engine is out you kinda do wan't to put other stronger bits in. This is where you will need to open your wallet. I'd leave it until you can afford to do it all in one hit. Unless of course you are keen on pulling the engine out yourself.

I deleted half my first post but ^^^^^ this is what I wanted to say...I understand your concern with the oil pump ect but its alot of work for yourself or alot of money to pay someone else to do it, I would do it all at once and do it properly if your gonna bother at all but as said its alot of money to do it all properly...

I think its a good idea to do the pump gear and port the pump housing. I know its a pain to do it with the engine in the car, but its doable and am considering doing it myself. Its just a pain to get the timing cover/oil pump housing back on with the head and sump in place without leaking. At least one of them needs to be unbolted to have half a chance of being leak free.

I dont think you need to worry about the guides as you can only replace stock with stock. There are not aftermarket stronger guides that I know off.

Timing chain jumping, havn't looked into it in detail.

I'd like to get some pictures of a ported oil pump housing as it should be pretty easy to DIY. I've ported a few stock pumps in the past, its not brain surgey, Just like to see how others do it.

Once the pump is done then at least you can rest easy. The rest of the engine is fine for moderate power.

Maybe someone doing a engine build and has a ported pump might take a few pics and post them up,would be good to see.
