There is a difference between a short shifter, quick shifter and a short throw shifter.

A short shifter means you have cut the length of the gear stick down, so now the height is less. The distance between the top of first and the bottom of 2nd will be marginally shorter due to geometry.

A short throw shifter has a modified pivot point so a lesser movement of the stick will have a greater movement on the gearbox linkage. The modified pivot point is also done in conjunction with a stronger spring which centralises the shifter when in neutral. As 3rd is directly up from neutral it makes 2nd to 3rd shifts tighter and more direct.

I have a mal wood with a 10 inch hurst gear stick. I believe the longer stick gives better leverage. The shorter stick may look cool, but in my opinion doesn't perform as well as the longer stick which has more mechanical advantage.

Plus you dont want a girl jumping in your car and saying you have a short stick.

The best mod you can do is get rid of the rubber damper on the bottom of the gear stick, or at the very least install metal plates at the sides to firm the shift up.It should be noted that you get some gearstick vibration a low rpm in higher gears.

^This! My latest shifter mod is another 15mm added too the already 25mm longer modded shifter I had. I have also angled the stick back and slighty towards the driver. The longer shift lever greatly reduces the force required too shift gear and will give you a faster shifter the a 3" stick that need 40kgs of force too get a gear!

I have been running solid mounting bushes for ages, Great feel but as Arron said increased noise as well as feed back through the stick. I recently reverted back too the stock rubber damper as a trial and have increased the preload on the rubber damper, much quieter and heaps less feed back but it does feel disconnected compared too the solid bushes, it has a shifting throught a bowl of silly putty feel too it

Mal Wood did ;)

true, cant be that hard to do...400bux is abit out there for something I could do myself.

I'd most likely end up doing as wiggum did and extend the shifter slightly leaning over to the steering wheel.

There is more to making a short shifter than cutting down the shift lever, yes it will make it have a shorter throw, but it will not be the same as a shifter that has been made with different pivot point, different rate springs etc

Complete waste of time unless you already have a short shifter installed.
