To our assorted Blue Brethren.

I was reading in Motor that the Bathurst Pace Car (Audi RS6) can't go much more than 140KM/H due to noise and wind issues from the Light Bar.

I was just wondering how Police Cars in general and the HWP in particular, sound and handle etc at Moderate to high Speed with these on?I cant imagine they're much of an aerodynamic aid!

Plonky, you for example said you were on a 160+KPH average pursuit, was there much of an issue with noise etc?

Are the light bars especially designed to be as slippy as possible or is it the case that most people will baulk out with Lights and Sirens at about 140?

Cheers.Just for interest sake!

Don't now about that, but as kids my mates once stranded some deep sea fishing line accross Moggil Road & removed the lights off the top of a Kenmore Police Car that was doing 50kph.

Yes I know it was stupid, I wasn't there, they were anebriated & thankfully no bikes came along, luckily despite some searching the upset officers couldn't find them.

Good question my socialist friend ( :))

The light bars that we have at the moment have a fair bit of drag and as such we generally unbolt them and move them back as far as possible. (Shhh but don't tell anyone)

The cars will still push into the 230/240 zone but the unmarked cars will get up to the 250+ zone.

They are very noisy and at speed the only person that can hear the siren is us and VKG.

You may notice that the lightbars are being reconfigured into strobes. There is a new style of light bar for the XR Falcon (sort of ellipsoid from side on) but like anything they're very noisy.

The Australian standard mandates that we have to project 360degree lights and reflective markings so that is why they are there.

Most States in the US have a muh better system where they take the roof bars off and have the two strobes in the back windows as well as the upper corners of the front windows and in the rear side windows. Much better, very much at eye level and aerodynamic though, because it is another intelligent thing that the US Police have, we won't get it. We just follow losers like the London Met.

Ktford,

I thought that I was the only one that done that ! But luckly we used the rubber band from inside the golf ball.........a guy on a motor bike came around the corner with a passenger and went through the rubber band.

We just bolted...... we really shat ourselves. The biker was ok, he just wanted to get the bastards.

Plonky, what bars do you use??

In QLD they are the U.S designed code 3 light bars. They have some noise but are OK, they will take 20km/h off the top speed though.

Oh we use some crap that was made in Tasmania...cheap I guess.

The new one for the Falcon looks very American. I like the old roof bar with the single blue Hella light on each side.....great through the air and as long as you had them on when you have a crash....

NSW and Victorian police use HAZARD unit's or so I am told.

Check out www.hazard.com.au

they do look very different to our units up here in QLD. I'm not a cop, just get pulled over regularly enough have had a good look a few times.

I think QLD police use Britax or something like that, no not the baby seat people.

The Security cars at work use a unit from Tasmania as well, probably the same one but with Orange bits instead of Blue.
