TIME:

Depart 7am BP Wallan northbound on Hume Freeway

DESCRIPTION:

This 2 day weekend cruise that takes in the VIC Alpine peaks of Bogong, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham in a loop with an overnight stay in historical Omeo. This has been made possible by the sealing of a section of the road between Falls Creek and Omeo which was completed in Nov 2009 - so this is a pretty virgin route. Our leg home on the second day also takes in the famed Targa High Country route between Whitfield and Mansfield. All roads are sealed and first day is 420km and second day 450km.

Rest up well the night before the cruise because the first day is long and requires concentration. Start from Wallan BP north of Melbourne and cruise up in a line up Hume Freeway to Glenrowan then turn off to head towards Bright for an early lunch. After an invigorating lunch, the twisities begin as we snake our way up Tawonga Gap to Bogong and Mt Beauty. By this time you'd think it can't get any better - but wait. A further hour of 2nd and 3rd gear corners keep us busy as we arrive atop Falls Creek for a short photo opp. Then the sleeper of a road just newly sealed in Nov 2009 - the Bogong High Plains Rd - what a sight. This year we'll take a breather break to stroll down to scenic Wallis' hut - a living museum just off track. Anyway, pace yourselves because the road into Omeo is just as challenging as the curves earlier in the day (just ask smokin brakes Rusty!). We plan to arrive into Omeo about 5pm tired but nothing a refreshing beer and hearty country meal can't sort out from the Hilltop Hotel next door to our accomodation the Omeo Motel. What better way to spend a Saturday night with a cool beer in hand and great conversation

Breakfast is at your leisure Sunday morning possibly at the popular Omeo bakery a short drive into town. Then its a 9am departure for Mt Hotham. The drive through Dinner Plain is flat and easy going compared with the twisties the previous day, but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security because after the photo opp at Mt Hotham, its twisties galore with spectacular backdrops as we head down into Bright for another early lunch. From here it's a bit of rural country roads before we encounter the hands full sweeping bends of the reknowned Targa High Country route between Whitfield and Mansfield. After a late lunch in Mansfield - it's an easy trip home through the luscious ferns and gum trees towards Whittlesea. From there, we end up on the ring road to make it easier for us get home.

There are alot of other ways to get home from Mansfield, and westy lads may prefer to take the Hume Freeway home as a faster route.

Please be aware there are some incredible twisties on this route - best let any passangers know of potential motion sickness. :buttonit:

Also, please ensure you have a contigency plan if you have a breakdown - like a mate who is willing to stay with you if necessary or Roadside Assistance. And it might be a good thing not to have anything critical to do on Monday incase you need that extra day to get home for some reason,

Last year's cruise :beerchug:

DURATION: 2 Days - Saturday and Sunday. As a courtesy to your fellow cruisers, please have a full tank at your first meet points. This is a long cruise - and it should go without saying that you can join/leave at anytime. 98 RON is not available whilst in the VIC Alpine National Park, so ensure you fill up with Caltex Vortex 98 RON at Bright on Saturday lunch and Sunday lunch.

BRING:

Strongly recommended (almost mandatory due to lack of mobilephone coverage in VIC Alpine National Park), UHF 40 channel CB Radio to keep across road hazards and general chatter. EvilDaifu has a few CBs for free loan on the cruise if anyone is interested - just PM EvilDaifu to reserve one.

Optional GPS so you know where you are, where you been and how to get where you wanna go :roflmbo:

Camera for the photo opps and the views.

Don't forget to bring extra batteries for your CB and camera - something makes me think we'd be chewing through the batteries on this cruise!

Sunnies :cool1:

Warm clothes - though it's March, it's still an alpine region and who'd believe it would be snowing up Mt Hotham 5 days before Christmas !!!.

3M clear contact tape (from auto stores) for your bonnet lips and maybe fog lights to protect against stone chips and cracks.

If you have an edit - maybe your flash boxes incase you need it - don't laugh :innocent:

Spare car keys

MOBILE COVERAGE:

Telstra Coverage

Optus Coverage

RULES:

1. Obey all laws whilst on the cruise; this means no speeding, no overtaking over double lines (no matter how safe you think it may be), etc...

2. There is a designated cruise leader who will lead the way and set the correct pace for all cruise members.

3. Use the Buddy system - always make sure you can see the car behind you. This will give people behind you an indication on where to turn to make sure nobody gets lost.

4. CB Radios - if you don't have one, follow the maps and directions given out. It is highly recommended to have CB as it enhances the enjoyment of the cruise being able to hear about road hazards and join in on the social chatter.

5. Please turn up to the meeting points with a sufficient fuel in your tank and enough time before the departure time.

6. Onus is on the owner/driver to ensure their vehicle is safe to drive on public roads and meets State road traffic authority laws.

7. Please ensure you have a contingency plan if you have a breakdown or unnecessarily delayed. e.g. Roadside Assistance or a mate in another car who is willing to stay with you if necessary.

8. By attending this cruise you agree not to hold FordXR6Turbo.com, it's Administrators, Moderators, Cruise Controllers, or Owner responsible / liable for any damage and / or grief sustained (simply; you are responsible for your own actions).

Hey fellas and gal,

Updated first post - yeah most of the places we will visit should have LPG. But I think you were saying mate you go through it faster litres / 100km so I haven't yet checked on the smaller towns if they have gas yet. Think you said you could do duel fuel so that will help I guess. Usually on these longer cruises - I carry a 10 litre jerry can of 98 RON anyway. Rudiger did as well last year. So for those coming along, if one or 2 of us carry some extra fuel - that should help. Omeo has 98 RON now by the way.

Adie, shouldn't have any issues car hopping - pretty much everyone is obliging on these cruises. Just that I couldn't do it cos I'd be spewing (literally :roflmbo:) if I sat gunshot in the twisities

Shall bring a bottle of port as well like last year :beerchug:

After today's cruise I will defiantly be riding shotgun for the alpine one. Played catchup the entire time.
