I heard today that he wasn't expected to make it through the night, but he did. His chances are very slim though.

The car had a full cage, Without it would certainly be dead. I heard both his legs are broken/ crushed, 2 broken vertebrae, serious gashs in his face, they were unsure of how his internals were, but he had blown up from all the swelling.

The car was making 600hp and it was the owner driving.

Man flown to hospital after Somerville smash

17:15   9 Feb 2012

Paramedics treated a man at Somerville this afternoon after the car that he was driving crashed into a tree.

Advanced life support paramedics from Langwarrin along with intensive care paramedics were called to Industrial Drive just before 3pm.

Intensive care paramedic Gary Robertson said the 45-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was in a great deal of pain.

‘The tree was absolutely demolished and there was a significant amount of damage done to the car.

‘He suffered a nasty wound to his face, along with chest injuries and possible abdominal injuries.

‘He had a lot of severe lower back pain which was our major concern, so we had to spinally immobilise him with special care for his back.

‘We also suspected that his right leg had been badly fractured.

‘A drip was used to give him intravenous fluids and an extensive amount of pain relief.

‘Given the nature of the impact, I was surprised that his blood pressure as reasonable and that was conscious and alert the whole time.

‘Nonetheless, the size of the impact was quite considerable so we had to fly him by air ambulance helicopter to the Alfred Trauma Centre,’ Mr Robertson said.

You'd think a full bred race car would have left him in better shape than that though...

No doubt it has a 3 point harness, full cage and a decent set of seats?

Yeah but it would've been the force that his organs decelerated inside his body that caused his problem.. While this is a race car don't make the mistake of thinking it would be running any of the safety features of a V8 super car or F1.. Low level racing regardless of 'safety requirements' are still quite dangerous cars..
