So unless its uploading all the time to a server for monitoring, how do you know if the units locked up?In a self managed setup, where the unit sms's you when it leaves a geofence, Here are the problems associated with it..Are you able to track the unit live if its moving? Do you constantly have to call, or SMS the unit for its location..In my opinion, that kinda self monitoring is poor.. Its only going to catch them if the vehicle is stationary, and you get that position. So this is where a Server based vehicle tracking is better. Updates every so many minutes, You have live position essentially. One of our customers had a VAN stolen whilst it was full of stock. The police were informed, and they requested the positions so they could Tail the van. They didn't apprehend the stolen van straight away, they followed it for the remainder of the day. Because of this, they found they had also stolen 2 other vans from other companies. Least to say, those 2 companies are now our customers

Updates every so many minutes, You have live position essentially. We have had plenty of instances where a vehicle is stolen, and located in a garage or warehouse once the vehicle is stationary. Often recovering multiple additional vehicles. However, crooks are more than aware of these transmitters and their first move once the vehicle arrives at such a storage location is to remove them. As such, transmitters need to be well hidden.I have also had vehicles stolen with tracking, and as soon as it is located stationary, it is already stripped of what the thieves wanted. Wheels, brakes, front seats etc.The apps with a dedicated server would definitely be most successful, real-time, reliable mobile tracking, so you/Uniform Police can get to the storage location as briskly as possible.I'm gonna do it, and hide the transmitter where no one will find it.Cheers

Feel free to ask me questionsI did read your post. My point was simply that they are hard enough to steal already, if someone really wants one, they're probably aware of GPS trackers as well. There are several cases in the USA of Ferrari's being put in to trucks to foil GPS systems so if someone was that keen on your car, they'd find a way to get it. Seeing as your in the business, how long do you have to recover the vehicle before its trashed/burned/parts removed?

And, that you need to hide the transmitters well. We've had Ferraris, Mercs, Porches etc with hi-tech alarms go missing in broad daylight and from highly secure facilities. And you are right about using trucks, they are almost all done with trucks and are worked on (opened, started or rebirthed) later. So:*If it is a joyride (though rare with new Fords) - Primarily, original keys are used. Joyrides usually result in an arson within hours.*If a vehicle is targeted for certain parts, this will usually occur immediately after the theft had occurred.*And if the vehicle is set for a rebirth; if it is not recovered in the first two weeks, it generally is not coming back.Cheers

Would you get a reduced insurance premium if you ha a GPS tracker?Manufacturers should look at putting this in factory but with an ignition cut as well. The owner could report the car stolen and when it next comes to a stop, the ignition cut would prevent it being restarted...I would have thought insurers would be pushing for this in new cars but I can't think of a single one with this capability.
