Reviving a very old thread after doing some digging on the forums for oil pressure values.

My brother just called me asking if 150psi on his oil pressure gauge is normal..... I really don't think that is. At all! This is him cruising on the freeway too.

For reference, he has a built motor, with billet pump gears and a worked pump housing.

My guess on oil is some form of a Castrol 10w-40. It is a very hot day today, in the high 30s.

He's thinking it could be a faulty sensor for the oil pressure gauge. I'm not so sure. I'm gonna put a scanner on it when I can to see if there's any codes.

Any ideas on this? Is this concerning?

Could too much oil cause this?

either a faulty sensor or the oil pump didn't have a relief added to it... probably won't hurt too much, realistically, as the pressure in the cylinders is higher than that, just (well, it should be)... but something to take to the tuner to see what's going on is definitely a good course of action.

For engines running over 35psi of boost it is recommended to run a high pressure relief spring (110psi+) and sometimes the pump will have a teeny weeny little bitty bolt that can raise the pressure further. There is a chance that the pump has had this done and will be running all kinds of pressure...all kindzzzz. Otherwise it could be a faulty gauge etc.

Yeah nah it's part of the casting. You'd have hundreds of psi if there wasn't a relief circuit. That's why housing crack, cos the housing is subject to the pressure before it bypasses the relief circuit.

as is always said, the best way to get the correct information on the internet is to post the wrong information and somebody will surely come and correct it :)

FFFFFFFFFFFSSSS

He called me and goes "so I removed the gauge and wiggled the connector at the back and now it's fine"

Are you fkn joking me.

Second confirmation the gauge and/or sensor is I <3 Bananased, he turned the car to acc and the gauge was reading between 70 and 100psi. 🤦‍♂️

I recently fitted an oil line kit supplied by the customer. The parts were anodized so when I fired it up there was an oil light. Pulled the whole thing apart again to diagnose and ended up having to run a wire to earth to get a proper oil pressure signal. That was a couple of hours I'll never get back :flick_flex:
