Gear Box Slipping After Tune

hi guys and girls,

iv had a ba for sometime and was having some issues with it so I took it a tuner in melbourne (I live in regional vic) who found ring lands broken. he put a tune in it so I could drive it home at my request ( on the drive home the car didn't run smooth and gear changes very sloppy n slow, didn't have a gear changing issue before hand). once I got the car home I pulled the engine out and found ring broken. I rebuilt the engine and put back in the car. the car still wasn't smooth and gear box issue still present. I was certain the problem was in the tune. bedded in the rings and retuned to the tuner in melt to get a tune finished to that we found the VCT was not working after spending a day at his workshop trying to figure it out I returned home however this time he gave me a differ tune which made the car drive perfect and changed gears nice and hard. drivability was amazing. At home found a broken wire from a cam pos sensor. repaired and returned to melb to get tuned finished. car made decent power @ 350kws and as it was raining I left to go home. However this tune seems to be like the first. cannot even notice gear changes and doesn't change in triptronic mode. as it was a sat I couldn't get a hold of him and he had was not at the business. I called him on monday and he said he would check the tune and email it to me I could then upload onto the scx3 and upload onto car. he has sent me tune but its the same. My question is is there a lot of settings in the ECU to adjust gear changes and is it possible to get someones basic tune to try a completely differ tune. I don't want a tune to make power just to check the gear box. the tuner I have been using is now telling me my gearbox is stuffed. but just seems weird how its happens since his tune has gone in. A3YA is the comp code and its a BA 4speed auto. has deka injectors

Is what I'm asking too much???

also seems to not slip as much when its cold.

Try servicing the gb first and check the oil for metal shavings.. But at that power, if its standard ill say its gone

Even if it has been modified the 4spd will over time sh*t itself with 350 rwkw's, they are weak as piss, a lucky few have got away with more power and a well built 4 spd but not many can say their 4 spd has lasted at that power level for too long, I went through 5 rebuilds at the exact same power level, 2 options would be get the 4spd rebuilt by either Dominellos, Yarra Valley Autos or Bayswater Autos and leave current tune in or detune the car to 300rwkw and replace with a stock 4spd, do you have a aftermarket transcooler fitted? How often is the 4spd serviced/flushed? If you want more from the car power wise consider a TH400, C4 or powerglide conversion ($6000-$10000 supplied and fitted) as rebuilding the 4spd annually will cost you more in the long term.

I havent had much to do with autos before and am running a built C4 in my skyline with a 26/30. Car was recently tuned at 475rwkw. Took the car for a bit of a run out on the back roads and loaded it up in top gear and something has broken. It has lost drive in all forward gears but still has reverse.

Does anyone have any ideas what has broken before I pull the box out.

The 4sp tune makes a big difference and a level of customisation is usually required based on the state of the box. In my experience getting the shifting correct can take longer than the engine tune. The tables are fairly funky as well and you really need to know what's going on. Even with a flogged out box you can 'save' the box to some degree.....ask slash :P

There is a lot in the Auto shift and you can't do generic tunes for them, depending on the auto rebuilder and base pressure there are no two alike, even the wear in stock autos and the power figres quoted from the dyno (they vary hugely). There are light and hard throttle shift pressure adjustments so they can be made to shift quite smooth on light throttle under power but it does take some time. Some of it requires some testing on road. Too hard a shift can snap components and break drivetrain components prematurely. There are tuners that just recycle tunes that they have gotten from the software suppliers that are designed as a convenient starting point not a polished tune, if the gearbox is slipping I would get onto now before it becomes a rebuild.
