Hello people. I have discovered that my engine bay is forming black dust. Belt fibres no doubt.

Anyone know if this is a common fault ? if so what is the cause ?

for my engine has only done 30000 clicks with no pulley mods.

Any thoughts would be great thank you .

Mainly trying to avoid the costly process of elimination.

we are seeing more and more of these... build up of rubber/plastic on water pump and idler pulleys cause belt wear... dont know why its happening but I have done pulleys and belts under warranty for this reason before

I had this happen and it was a loose harmonic balancer (moved forward) causing the belt to rub and shed one section of the grooved belt.

on all that iv seen it seemed to be belt delamination... iv seen the balancers move and the belts run on the front of the pulleys but if that's not happening yeh id be looking at tensioner issue (unlikely) or replace the belt and clean up/replace pulleys and see how you go... I have never seen a tensioner faulty other than bearing noise and iv been workin on them since their release every day lol

I removed the belt, and removed the upper idler pulley and the self tensioner, from what I can see is that the self tensioner has alot of grease escaping from its internal workings. seems as if the seal is gone.

I have also seen that the upper idler pulley is pretty worn, also looks as if its not running true. it looks as if it has a rubber damper that cushions the bearing from the bolt ?? silly design I would think for something that must always run true.

anyway im going to replace the upper idler and more than likely replace the self tensioner, and see how it goes, if I find this has fixed the problem ill replace the belt.
