Hi all, I have a ba mk 2 ute with a strange steering noise. When the car is stationary or backing and filling at car parks etc and I use a fair amount of steering lock I'm getting this noise, it sounds like a metallic popping/ cracking noise.

I figured no big deal and decided to change the front end upper and lower ball joints, tie rods and tie rod ends, sway bar links and all the bushes. While I was there I also check torqued all the cross member bolts and rack bolts thinking this should have nailed the fault, but $650 and 15 hours later it made the same noise as I backed out of the shed tonight. ( pissed off)

Just wondering if any others have had similar issues and what they found?

I was thinking that maybe the steering shaft uni joints are shagged being so close to the turbo, but I'm reluctant to blow more cash before finding a definate cause,

Has anyone had a go at rebuilding the steering rack in these yet?

Any help would be great thanks guys

Its the steering rack (its moving) . I think ford have a fix but I cant remember what it is , they did it to mine, but it still does it occasionally. Try loosening the nuts and re-torque to ( just looking it up) (80Nm).

I found the Ford Technical bulletin on this issue, give me your email and I will send it to you.

Not sure about an auto, but with the manual I just dropped the sway bar out and had heaps of access and the torque figure is cast into the cross member right next to the studs, at least fraud had some brains when the made the car lol
