They are meant to be bigger for towing and that, could it be possible that they have the same part number but different reference number? Like one for the falcon and one for the terri?

It's irrelevant anyway as it won't solve the problem.

I think it was the R-Spec that had a slightly bigger one, but as dillz said it makes no difference, as they corrode or crack inside causing the coolant and oil to mix.

It's a shame, coz it's such a good box, but is let down by a poorly made heat exchanger.

its just another product ford fail to treat properly that ends in rust.

they continue to cut corners and in the end it just comes back and bites them in the ass. and prob costs them more money in the end anyways.

just thought I'd update this thread incase anyone was interested.

A fluid flush and filter change was done in an attempt to resolve the problem but no good unfortunately. After having the internals inspected, it turns out the trans needs a full rebuild pretty much. The trans shop is also looking into an aftermarket air cooler kit for me in order to bypass the heat exchanger to avoid having this problem again. A simple failure has ended up costing me thousands, so I strongly advise those with ZF-equipped cars that are no longer under warranty to either replace your heat exchanger and coolant, or bypass the thing altogether and run an air-to-air trans cooler kit if possible, otherwise you could end up with a hefty bill like me.

Unfortunately this sh*t happened at a terrible time, when I'm in the market for a house, so not really in a position to spend big bucks on the car but I have no choice as I need the car on the road as it's my only car at the moment. What can you do, sh*t happens I guess.

Jeez that sucks mate, but a good warning to all ZF owners, it can happen to anyone at any time.

Hey mate,

Just going standard rebuild as the job is expensive enough as it is. Full rebuild is around 4-4.5k using brand new genuine ZF parts. I would imagine the price would go up from there if I wanted a stronger box. Cost of transcooler kit is unknown at this stage, the trans builder is looking into it for me and will get back to me on price.
