Yeah it's sux man, know how ya feel. Apparently when water gets into the ZF it farks all the electronics and that, which destroys the gearbox (can't be fixed).

If it has milkshaked your gonna be looking at a new gearbox, definitely try and get it repaired but I've done a sh*t load of research on the subject and yeah I don't like ya chances. 9 out of 10 times its a new gearbox.

Worst part is it is pretty much unpreventable just happens at random, you could have a babied stocker or a 1000hp monster doesn't matter.

how bad does it have to get (ie how many zf's have to die) before ford/zf do a recall and sort out a new heat exchanger or whatever needs to be done

It's the system that's the problem and Ford will never fix it.

It can easily be fixed with an external tranny cooler that bypasses the heat exchanger, only problem to date is that the ZF is so sensitive to pressure drops in the line that in can be tripped into limp mode with an external cooler. It is also very sensitive to exstensive temperature variants that can happen with an external cooler working allot better then the standard system.

To get round this you need to make sure you use stainless braided lines on your external cooler to control pressure in the line and a ZF tune will help sort out the temp issues.

Wish I knew this ages ago, I would've got rid of the heat exchanger a long time ago. So depressing. Is this a common problem or what? Cant believe the box can die so easily and you need to fork out several grand for a new one. Ridiculous. Any idea how much a new ZF is from ford?

It's been relativity low key as it hasn't been too common but I can see it becoming more and more common as more FG's hit the road.

Thing is mate you'd be in the same boat as me, either wait for it to happen and hopefully you can get a new gearbox under warranty or try and prevent it from happening with an external tranny cooler which will void your warranty if something else goes wrong..

It's loose/loose.

Hence why I'm buying a manual, I've lost all faith in this gearbox.

but if I wasnt into cars or on this forum, I wouldnt even know about this prob anyways. so id be dumb founded if it started happening to me.

It's not so much as if you can't afford as it's a cheap fix, about $300 installed. It's that fact that fixing it voids your whole driveline warranty so if you if anything else happens your in the sh*t.

Not really, BF's seem to be ok. More and more FG's seem to be copping it though.
