Sounds like the the Diff bush is flogged out. Mine had torn the bolt out of the diff housing itself ,the only way to avoid the clunks was also very smooth clutch control.

Im not sure if its the same on the these fords, but to test the propshaft just put it in gear with the hand brake on and look for uni play whilst turning the prop shaft by hand back and forth.

hi there, can someone shed some light on this situation please I to had problems with my diff bolt ripping out of the diff backing plate had drop the whole rear end to get to the bolt out then have my backing plate ezy-outed then rethreaded and put all back together it was fine for about 2 months then all of a sudden I went to reverse in my driveway and then I heard that familiar bang so then I jacked it up had a look at the bolt seems to be ok not loose or broken. When you select the reverse gear it wont make the thud until you accelerate so I got a second opinion he reckons the bush that surrounds the main diff bolt is what he called nested, cracked he said you have drop the rear end again to fix (fuming by this time) then I get home put it in reverse accelerated bang but this time after the bang it would not reverse then selected drive to go forward it went forward but it felt tight as hell I also noticed while cruising if you took your foot of the accelerator it dosent roll freely like driving with the handbrake on just a little getting back to the main problem no I cant move the car in neutral it wont roll back or forward can someone give me any ideas that might help?

cheers

anthony

Might be a diff if it'll go one way an not the other, does it make any noise when driving slowly? Id jack it up n remove the tailshaft & try spinning the wheels and diff input yoke, that'll give you a fairly good idea where the problem is.
