I've tried doing a search on this on the forum already, but its been a bit difficult because I'm still new to these cars, and am not quite sure what I should be searching.

Anyway, every now and then when I start my car, before I even get a chance to take the handbreak off it backfires, and stalls. When I start it again its fine, though occasionally the speedo (only the speedo - not he tacho or anything else in the cluster) stops working, and wont work again until I turn the car off and back on again.

Its a BF mkII XR6T with the 6sp manual.

Would love to know whats causing this as its pissing me off. The car is due for a service, but I've been having a lot of trouble finding a mechanic who I can trust (epic issues with my last car).

Thanks in advance!

I'm out in Moonee ponds. She started without issue today. It's just really odd what's happening.

Mine used to backfire on start up very occasionally and when it was hot. It also used to turn over once, and then stop. I added another earth strap to the starter and I didnt have another backfire. 12 months later the starter motor died. Could be all coincidence.
