I was reading one of my Motor Mags and I noticed a lil aticle about a 6 speed gear box for the Series 2 BA, XR6T, XR8, and all FPV.

I was just woundering if anyone has info on what happening here. :o

I have made my mind up to get the SSS Auto cause I've heard some really good stuff pus they get a bigger pay load, but if they bring out a 6 speed manual I'll get that in stead for sure!!

Supposedly,

6 speed will come in both Manual/Auto configuration, the Auto is to be the ZF model out of the current Jag.

I'm not sure about the manual, but Ford are working on a plan for better auto gearboxes. That is pretty much a fact. The issue is exactly what the new gearboxes will be, and when they'll be introduced.

Rumour has it a new auto may appear for the Series II, possibly the ZF 6 speed auto. The ZF as used in the new Jags is supposed to have a much higher torque rating than the current 4 speed unit, and is also lighter, so it makes sense from an engineering perspective. However, it won't be cheap, so if it does come out, it may well only appear on the FPV cars at first, or may be a pricey option on the XRs.

As usual though, nothing's in concrete yet.

I will start off by saying I know JACK SH!T about the internal workings of auto's , but if there are more gears (6 in the new ZF trans), is there more things than can go wrong with it?

One of the strongest transmissions made is a two speed Powerglide!

I personally think four forward gears is enough, if the final gearing is right, but I am always open to change and improvement!

Theoretically more moving parts can increase the danger of failure, but you'll find that gearboxes, like any stress-bearing piece of equipment, eventually die due to failure caused by stress, or more specifically, torque loadings. Although it has 2 more gears, the ZF box is supposedly engineered with much stronger internals which can handle higher torque loadings, so its relaibility should be better in the longer term.

As for the extra 2 ratios, a six speed would allow for a lower 1st gear, not dissimilar to that of a manual, thus taking away the one big weakness of an auto being the standing starts. The 6th speed ratio may be similar to the ratio already found in 4th gear in the current auto box, so the remaining gears in between are tightly spaced to allow the engine to always be in its power band when you give it a kick in the guts. Better rolling-start response is the end result.

A 6 speeder sounds good to me!!!

Yes ms700, powerglide strong, but ultimately boring as bat sh*t to drive. Nothing weak about a C6/C4 when built properly. They are in 400hp Jag's currently so I'm assuming they're safe to well above this level.

IMO six speed gearboxes are a lot of wank! If I was worried about gearbox strength/weakness I would consider putting in a toploader! Just my 2cents.

At Broadmeadows, Geoff Polites made the point that the 6 speed auto will drive pretty much like the current box... :o

Possibly 2 "overdrive" gears (5th & 6th) rather than just 4th, and that on all but the most "spirited" :o standing starts, the box will start in second gear, as it's close to the current 1st ratio...

I'll let you know what I know about the ZF 6 speed auto. This box is smaller and lighter than the BTR and has less moving parts as well. It is rated at up to 650NM of Torque so it is way stronger than the BTR and would be much higher quality and therefor much more reliable than the BTR. It would be pretty pricey though but you get what you pay for. The shift quality is supposed to be top notch and that under full throttle you can barely even feel the changes. Lowering the first gear ratio down and making the other gears closer will make a huge difference to the XR's acceleration and fuel economy. Motor claimed a few months ago that a standard Falcon six with a six speed auto was one whole second quicker to 100 than the current auto. So much for a wank.
