In Australia we can say what we want as long as it is not libellous, slanderous or breaches Federal Anti Discrimination/Villification laws........

Unless you've got Parliament Privlege.........

Aye to expand on Plonky....

Basically the Americans have in their "Bill of Rights" the "Right to freedom of expression and freedom of speech".

In Australia this "Right" does not exist. Each and every word that is spoken, written or recorded in some form in this country is open to legal scrutiny. For the most part our laws are sensible enough that day-to-day and non-intentional expressions and comments generally wouldn't be held up in court as libel or slander.

However....

Everythign you say that refers to an item or service, where you may express a negative aspect of your experience with the product is very much open to the laws of libel/slander.

It gets even worse if you may be 'percieved to be capable of influencing the thoughts and purchasing habits of others'. etc etc

And that's why I say freedom of speech is non-existant becuase there are plenty of business owners out there in Australia who trawl newsgroups, websites and forums looking for information that portays them in a negative light, and instead of trying to fix the situation they immediatey launch the lawyers.

I've been on the end of it and let me tell you it's a pain in the bum....

A.
