Mentioning the Xcal is important :)

$2000 for the xCal 3 and a custom tune is fine, nothing out of the ordinary there.

If it was $2000 for the tune and no xCal then that would be a rip off

wow that's a bit much for a injector oring. it depends what you want out of the car mate. if you want 300+ then go injectors and actuator, but if youre happy with the power you have now then maby just get a second opinion on the actuator from another tuner/mechanic and replace if required, stock injectors should be fine aslong as the tune doesnt let it lean of. but if those injectors made 290 and youre running it on 255kws most of the time I cant see a problem, aslong as youre happy with 255 or 290 from time to time.

Thanks for the replies. I spoke to the tuner today, he quoted me $700 to do the injectors, $1000 to change the actuator, $200 to port the wastegate, and $500 for a retune!!! Total $2400. Add that to the $2500 I've already spent and I'm looking at nearly 5 grand for a stage 1 tune!! Am I getting ripped here or what? I told him that was too much, he then said maybe just do the injectors and he'll try to play around with the actuator to see if he could get it better and a re tune for $1200. He also said I might need to do the fuel pump. Is this cost getting ridiculous or what? I originally just wanted a tune with stock injectors. Help me out guys. Is there anyone in Sydney I can call for a second opinion?

Are you able to do things yourself? Pulling the turbo off is very time consuming and you could save a lot of coin doing it yourself. The injectors are an easy half hour job and I think that is too dear for a retune but not an uncommon price. I think you'll find the biggest expense is labor, so pull out the spanners and give it a go.

actuators are what $150? add mark up of 70% and that's around $250 for parts and that means the other $450 is labour. I dont know about you guys but it doesnt take me 4 and a half hours to take a turbo of and put it back on again. I think with bfs you are suposed to do the fule pump with injectors (corect me if im wrong) takes me just under 1 hr to do a fule pump on a ute, but never tryed a sedan which have a different tank. as 234Fpv said injectors are easy 1/2 hour job but the problem is there, I would think it would become undrivable with bigger ones.

keep in mind most workshops mark up parts 70% so do youre reserch and buy them youreself. and most workshops will charge atleast $100 an hour so do all you can do by youreself mate. buy a repair manual if you like I would guess it would tell you step by step how to take the turbo but make sure its in the book befour you buy it.

He told me it's about an 8 hour job to change the actuator and wants to charge $1000 I think he said. I'm thinking of calling him back and asking him to retune the car as is (stock as a rock) he manage to get 290 rwkw out or it so I think he should be able to back it off a bit to make it safe and I would be more than happy.

The reason why I need a retune now is because he scared me when he first tuned it by telling me not to use the race tune and go easy on the street tune until I do the actuator. he should have just tuned it the best he could for what the car could safely handle instead of going nits and then handing me the car back and saying don't use the race tune ect... That's not what I wanted.

Also, the car doesn't feel as quick as when it was stock until you hit 4500-5000 rpm. The turbo doesn't kick in as early and as hard. I raced my brother's V8 who (when stock) would get about a car length ahead and then the turbo would kick in and I would instantly catch him and pass him. Now with the street tune he keeps pulling away until I hit 5000 rpm and start to catch up but by then he's already 2 or 3 cars ahead. Even the wife said it doesn't feel as lively, and the wife of course never floors it so at light throttle and low rpm the car is slower. Not happy!

5k for basic tune.. that's crap.. I got a 3.5" turbo back exhaust, internal pump, cooler, injectors and t56 conversion for that

It seems to me your actually confused on what your actually trying to achieve, I would say whats happened is you have gone in for a tune only on stock injectors and he has wound it up and maxed everything out as much as possible boost, injectors etc

And sounds to me what your really after is the most possible power with stock injectors and boost which is 100% reliable even if that means having less boost and theirfor less power seeing as its only been tuned I would explain to him that u want above and to make whatever tune changes are needed to achieve this and just drive it around as is.

You are spot on! However, he's going to now charge me for a retune which I think is unfair. There was no consultation with me whatsoever during the tuning as to what the limits of the car was and what I would like him to do. He just went ahead and maxed everything and when he was finished, took the car off the dyno, took my money and told me that the car basically cannot handle the tunes that he's put on. (all the while thinking " I'm gonna get this guy to spend more money now")

I'm gonna ask him to touch up the tunes to be safe and leave the car as is, hopefully he doesn't charge me (much).
