Ok I can understand maintenance staff being concerned, Qantas can always service their planes in Asia, pilots too they can hire them anywhere but WTF are baggage handlers on about? How the I <3 Bananas can they be outsourced if that is their main concern? Will some Asian cnt in Thailand unload my bags when I land in Sydney?

Since the demise of centralised and compulsory wage fixation in the wake of labour market de-regulation in the late 1980's, the income gap between skilled and non-skilled labour continues to grow. Australia is now one of the most unequal income nations in the OECD behind the UK, Portugal and the US. TAB please find fault with this, Cheers

There was an article on the front page of the West Australian newspaper a couple of months back. The unions were trying to negotiate a pay rise for forklift drivers up North at the mines because 'their wage was not enough for the cost of living'. They 'only' getting up to $190,000 a year. No doubt they all had taken out huge bank loans to get their degree in nuclear physics so they could drive a forklift?

Why can't people be content to have a job instead of striking and whinging all the time? Try living in the USA with unemployment around 9% you'd be grateful to get a job at McDonald's.

If Qantas workers are already getting paid more than their counterparts what's the problem? They can throw as many tantrums as they want but if they get their way they'll price themselves out the market & lose their jobs anyway.

Meanwhile the 150kg hard working union bosses sit on their starfish & get rich. They don't give a stuff about the country or the workers they're only interested in their hip pocket. W@nkers all of em.

Read somewhere that greens want to introduce a legislation that would cap the CEOs pay at 30 times the average company salary. Makes sense to me...

The Airline industry is not like other industries. When an engine blows up in a 747 you can hardly roll to a stop and call a tow truck. I don't fly much but I have only ever flown Qantas for a reason. Safety. Having mature pilots, knowing a plane has been serviced by Australians with a good safety culture/mentality gives me piece of mind.

A safety culture/mindset cannot be created over night. It takes decades. The Asian countries are not anywhere near the same level the Aussies are.

As a consumer I want Australian pilots/plane staffing and Australian Plane Servicing only.

Joyce made a big mistake is shutting down the airline and a bit of a co-k getting a pay rise when he is trying to screw the honest working Aussie.

If you wish to continue with a high profile brand that is premised on safety you need to employee the best in the business. The QANTAS brand will only survive if can provide the current level of service and safety. For the brand to continue we need Australians to maintain and service these machines. The majority dont understand that it was "The Australian Way" that made this company what it is today. Cheers

What they are on about has not been mentioned in the media

Qantas are f*cking them hard and now will continue to do so

It's too much to post here or publicly but basically what's happening is Qantas has started another company that does the exact same job but on a much lesser rate, no new staff are being hired and older long term and full time staff are being played around with, new staff are hired under new company less conditions etc... New company is slowly taking over Qantas Baggage work, soon Qantas will be gone and new company will do all work at selected ports

This has not happened on ramp yet but it will, it's slowly been happening over the past few years

Also Qantas is pushing for a B scale, so if they do hire any new staff in certain departments they will work on the B rate of pay

In most cases the guy working along side you doing the exact same job is making $3 less per hour before penalties etc...

There are many other issues, but this is the basic idea...

I have seen this happen over the last 7 years at the airport

There's no way the Qantas brand can survive if it can't compete. The international business has been running at a loss for ages. OK lets be real generous to the baggage handlers - pay them $1M a year. Qantas will go broke but no matter the revolution has succeeded. Uncle Che would be proud.

I also did a Sydney/Los Angeles trip with Qantas a few weeks ago. It was business class on the A380 & the staff were rubbish. I've had better service on Singapore Airlines economy. The hostess talked/laughed out loud in the cabin all night while people were trying to sleep. Meal service was sloppy & they kept missing items. Quite a lot of people were pretty pissed off. Hardly what I'd call the best in the business more like scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Not that I've got a lot of sympathy for the gay Irishman Alan Joyce. He's replaced the guy who I believe has gone over to Virgin Airlines & is now trying to run Qantas as a budget airline to be competitive. Virgin are managing to do the same but have obviously attracted better staff who can provide premium service for less money.

Welcome Richard Branson. Lets see the unions try & put one over on him.

MexicanBatman - wasn't the labour supply company setup with the union's cooperation? Regardless though what's that got to do with the current employees, provided they aren't unfairly dismissed then life continues as normal doesn't it, it's not like the lower wages are being forced on existing employees?

What gives any employee the right to get involved in strategic operational decisions about hiring future employees?
