Accident photo galery

:( Above is a link to a series of photo's of my "T" after a run in with a light pole. The score was "T" 2 - Pole 1. The car won but has some serious damage.

For those of you who watched todays racing and saw the 2 cars aquaplane and spin during the downpour on their way into the pits, that's what happened to me.

I was going along Boundry rd Braeside, just after the Lwr Dandenong rd roundabout, when the car aquaplaned at about 30-40kmph. The traction control was on. I never had a chance, it was a torrential downpour and I thought I was driving appropriatly for the conditions. The car started sliding and I was just a passenger. The air bags didn't even activate it was going that slow.

Due to this accident I will now be delayed in getting the auto fixed, I'll let you all know when.

Latter, Geea.

That sucks. At least it was an "easy to knock over" traffic light not a solid power pole or similar. The bolts on the bottom that attach it to the cround are actually made to break for exactly that reason. Damage would have been much worse. because its obvious from the looks of the dead traffic light that it and its mountings took much of the impact and moved with it rather than holding firm and damaging the car even more.

Not to rub it in, but from experience I can tell you if the rain is torrential, then pull over - and far enough off the road so someone losing it wont hit you. You can usually pick this kind of rain as it bounces off the road, making seeing the foot or so above the road near impossible as its clouded.

Also, aquaplaning is caused by water pooled on the road. If water is pooled on the road, its usually visible. If its visible, you can watch for it and be aware.

If you do see pooled water on the road, the key is to maintain direction and let nothing change. Dont brake. Dont accelerate. Dont steer. Just keep things steady and try to have your car set up for a straight line through it, and hope the car continues on its original course until it clears the water.

Doesnt always work (especially on corners! But pooled water on corners isnt as common) but its the technique most likely to stop you losing it.

I know how traction control kicks in when aquaplaning. Ive done a 360 in Dads Merc and a 120 in Mums Jag - and traction control and ABS meant that there is nothing you can do as the car was assuming you had lost traction, so killed the brakes and also killed the accelerator. That sucks in some circumstances. If no ABS, it would not have been so bad.

The main thing is that you are OK and able to post a message about it here.

Keep us up to date with how things develop, especially the cost of the traffic light repair! (Im interested in knowing).

Bad luck geea, but I have one small comment:

Instead of a traffic light, you could have at least managed to take out a stationary camera for us....

Hope the car comes back better than factory. Good chance to fix any stone chips on the front.

Sorry to hear the bad news.

But I was just wondering, does this have anything to do with the type of tyres that people use or is it due to the width of the tyres ?

Daniel
