I am planning to change oil for my fg xr6t. After reading this thread, I am a bit confused as different people use different oils. I will stick wt Castrol Edge fully synthetic as it is recommended by Ford. However, between 0W40 and 10W60, I'm still confused which one is used. Can anyone explain to me what the meaning of these 2 numbers. I don't drive my car hard all the times (just occasionally). Someone say 10W60 is too thick and only needed under hard driving while others says 0W40 is too thin and the turbo needs thicker engine. So which one is better for everyday driving?

In the factory manual, they recommended 15W40 for XR6T (there's no synthetic oil at this grade), but for the XR8, they recommended 15W40 for the first 15000K then 0W40 thereafter. Should the turbo use the same engine with the V8?

0-40 is the oil to use. The turbo oil seals dont like the 60 weight when cold.

Agree 60W is too thick unless doing track stuff, but I wouldn't run '0' weight myself. Nothing to do with cold start etc, it's more that these engines are known to get 'chattery' in the valve train etc running oil that thin. If that doesn't bother you then go that way.

What some of you are saying doesn't really make sense. When talking sub operating temperature, how can a viscosity of 0 be necessary when Ford recommend a 15 winter? Additionally, you would think owners of both modified and unmodified Falcons would drive similarly when the engine's cold. Pitlane recommend the 10W-60, which would mean a bit to most on here I assume.

...and 10w-60 for 'high performance applications'.

Bomber: how is 0w-40 too thin? its still classed as a 40 at operating temperature and if its thinner at start up then that's better than a 10 or a 15.

Yep its right at the bottom line 10-60. Castrol web site says 0-40 or magnatec 10-40 which is the preferred oil. 60 maybe a good choice at the race track when you can keep the car hot. When I changed from 10W to 0W my oil pressure when cold went from 100psi to a max of 75psi. I would say the 100psi would have really been pushing the limits of the turbo seals
