Canon's CPS (Canon Professional Service) can cost a bit. They recommend getting the lens and body calibrated together.

This article contains a lot of info on testing... http://www.canonrumo...to-test-a-lens/

I've also attached a test chart.

Don't get too hung up on testing though. Some people take it far too seriously and examining images at large magnifications has nothing to do with real world scenarios.

I've never felt the need to send my camera or any of my lenses in for adjustment. All of my lenses fall into line with what I've read in reviews. My 100-400mm for example isn't that sharp wide open, but stop it down to f/8 and it's razor sharp.

I always use http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ to research a lens and look at the test charts on there. You can also directly compare lenses on that site.

Quality of the lens will have a lot to do with how sharp a lens is too. We can't expect a $200 lens to be as sharp as a $2000 lens.

Hey Guys,

Your work is coming along Craig! Good to see!

I am at the complete noob beginner end of the photography world, and am interested in getting a DSLR. I have been looking at the Canon EOS 550D, as I can't spring for the 60D, and want to keep body and lense under $1000.

Can anyone give me their opinion or pros and cons of this camera? The one I am looking at comes with a twin lense kit - Twin Lens Kit (EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS and EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens). From what I read here these lenses aren't that great?

Can someone point a complete beginner in the right direction please?

Cheers,

Daniel.

Well you can't buy a good body and two good lenses for under $1000 :)

I had both of those and I didn't mind the 55-250 but 18-55 felt sh*t.

Does anyone know if the 18-135 is any better? Or 18-105 from nikon?

Have you got any other lenses yet craig? if not how is the 50mm f/2.8 going as an all rounder? They have a Canon 50mm f/1.8 on there for $106, and the 60D body for $879, interesting.

He must mean the 50 f/1.8. There isn't a 50mm f/2.8.

I'll reply in a bit more detail after work.

Ah must be that, haven't used it for awhile as I use my tanrom 17-50mm f/2.8 flat out now but that was a few hundred. I mentioned on pg2 or something what lens I got with the 60d. Next lens I'll get will be a wide angle lens, wider than 17, love them photos. But next is a flash gun as I got a mate who dj's in geelong wants me to get pics of him playing and the whole club etc. I did shoot last year without flash n was no good. Soft box on its way atm from eBay. I'm happy to spend money on this stuff as I have something to show for it all :)

Agreed... No 2.8...

How good a lens is the 50mm for $100 LOL just stuck with 50mm but the depth and bokeh is awesome for the price!
