in regards to drag cars, I beg to differ on many points that are getting thrashed around, IMHO:

No use having all the trinkets a Motec offers if your tuner doesn’t know how to make the most of it. Seen it too often before where a new build gets a Motec,( or similar top end ecu) only to be replaced by a much simpler computer that creates less havoc and is easier to tune.

At the end of the day, its a drag car, the worlds quickest one's don’t even run EFI!! All they have to do is stage, do a burn out and then be held at WOT for 7 secs.

My suggestion is to choose a tuner, then use what he is the most comfortable in getting the job done with, I doubt many would say that a Motec is needed. Save your money and time and spend it elsewhere, maybe on a clutch less manual gearbox, much better bang for buck

In regards to Intercoolers, don’t dick around with W to A, or dry ice specially for a drag car, the headf*ck outweighs the benefits.

Run a big, high flowing air to air and put the car on straight Methanol. It will be consistent, easy to set up and the stuff is cheap.

The air to air will help just "numb" the temps to make them even more consistent to get a nice tune sorted. The nature of the Methanol and its cooling effects will outweigh any benefits even the best dry ice cooler will give over it. Again, refer to the fastest drag cars on the planets, non run intercoolers at all.

Just have to set up a few systems in place that make draining and flushing the fuel system after very meet and swapping the oil out. It’s easy to maintain, pm me if you want more info

Just my opinion bloke, hope you don’t mind. Just seems that the whole Ford scene is plagued with sheep mentality at the moment and don’t look at other types of cars for guidance.

Classic example is the fastest BA in the country, spoke to the owner at length at WSID last year, great guy, and pointed out that many aspects of his build aren’t the norm for the rest of the scene, and he has the quickest

ale good points but this is where the ford 4.0 comes into its own and the goals achieved with the barra donk, everyones done the n/a v8 or blown meth v8 and yeh proven to the endith degree but its when your tyring to make the only and fastest barge go down 400mtrs in a 6cyl capacity its gets a bit hard but development is comming along vey well concidering we dont have the yanks to lean back on with bulk r&d,

so far the fastest near on 4000lb barge as done decent 8's and that's not to be sniffed at when u start weighing up hp per /cubic inch the down falls to this is in some cases its nice to have your cake and eat it 2 in regards to having all the bcm working with an aftermarket ecu and things like motec are starting to be the winning choice because these bulk and fancy features are more suited to our cars than most nearly all ricers.

yeh the tuner does need to be very compitent with the ecu and this is where experiance will shine through

motec and high end ecu's offer what alot of medium priced ecu's dont and that's staged boost/gear/timing as said at the flick of a switch or even broken down to timing brackets of induced boost or gear, making what is a 1950's platform 6cyl do 8 seconds gets technical and every part has to work in unicen

stars, moon ,planets align and hey presto it just might happen

all good fun

Far from a ricer mate. I'm a fan of all types of cars and racing. The motec is the pinnacle, no doubt, but for this application is total over kill and will add many a curve ball.

Easy example:

Take a few secs to goggle any of the 6 sec GAS motor sports cars.( it similar). All run methanol, all run clutchless trans, all run Haltechs and the motors are just as high tech as a barra. I could get staged geared boost control using my $200 eboost if I wanted. Even a budget Microtech can be made to fully data log and do what's need to get from A to B in 7 secs. Current R35 GTR, what ecu are they piggy backing onto the factory Nissan computer? Can't tell me a drag barra is more hi-tech!

Find me the quickest Motec drag car and Il find you 10 quicker ones using a different, cheaper simpler ecus. A stripped out coon with Molly cage, a good rear clip and 32x15s on the back will come in well under 2 tonnes. Even if you make as much as the biggest HP current taxi, it will be smash the current record. It really is that simple, the physics involved with drag racing havnt changed.

.

And worst case if its not meeting our expectations the block out of my white taxi might get pumped full of goodies with a bigger turbo whacked on :). I dunno its a sickness it never really stops once you start so who knows where it will go.

As long as I get to enjoy this one a lil longer than the last.

So... Whatcha gonna do with that ol turbo when ya go bigger then? Hint hint* ;)

You are right Ale like I said in a previous post though the buggy my mechanic built with the ls2 runs a motec and is tuned by this fella troy who has also tuned the big injectors on other applications. I mess around with jet saying its cos of him that I want motec but I am grateful of the questions he's been asking. Hopefully this is just a stepping stone onto bigger things with the full chassis car and much bigger application so gotta look at the bigger picture too. Having said that I've done way too much over so long to jump into anything without research n thought we may well change our minds once or twice on ecu choice by the end of the build.

As for meth we have talked about that too and again its on the cards at a later date but we still wanna give e85 a go first.

And Alex if I do go bigger I can tell u one place my turbo wont be going and that's to you :P....

Nah don't be mate! Things happen and as commented ages ago, sometimes for a reason and lucky it was then and no injuries, than a bad crash and maybe even fatal.

Plus this newie is gunna be a gun! Looking forward to the progress of it :spoton:
