What's The Purpose Of The O2 Sensor?

My mate put a diagnostic test on my cars computer a while back, and while I fixed up most of the problems, I still haven't gotten around to replacing the o2 sensor that is apparantly stuffed. Pricing one I believe was around $400 but my mate said that all it does is regulate fuel consumption. Is that the only function it has? and should I bother replacing it if my fuel consumption is in the normal range?

I got one from fleabay for like $70! Helped smooth out my idle a little.

Wow thanks for the quick reply mate! Will that one be compatible with an xr6T BA 03 Model?

The listing description has the same part number (scroll down to see table) but if someone who knows for sure could chime in? IE are BA and BF O2 sensors the same? Do they both have two or is there only one on BA?

I replaced mine thinking it was the cause for my high fuel consumption & due for replacement(85K on the clock) but it did squat to improve fuel consumption, & its a bitch to get to(dump pipe on BA).

The BA's have 1 & the BF's have two. When I was researching it I found the BA are different to the BF's, although e-bay sellers will say they are both compatible. The one I got from ebay cost about $70 & was identical to the original one(I have a BA).

The purpose of a O2 sensor is to detect the oxygen content in the exhaust gases coming out of your engine, it tells the PCM whether it is running rich or lean and the PCM will adjust accordingly. Usually if the O2 sensor is faulty the PCM will default to a rich mixture, but depending on how it faults, the O2 sensor may just provide a constant output to the PCM (not completely sure about the constant output idea)... Hope that helps...

As stated it is mainly to lean on when cruising (light throttle application) to save fuel. Not having a working one will just use a little extra fuel.

Had the car got a aftermarket exhaust? I hear that the computer will always send that fault if the exhaust has been modified.

Aftermarket CATs will give you a engine light as fords only like 'euro' cats. This will result in your system leaning out and potential detonation. Replacing the CAT requires a flash tune.

Done alot of research recently with the exhaust side.

Replacing your o2 sensor will make the car run alot nicer.
