I have a 2005 BA falcon 130,000 kms approx, every now and then theres a whining/whiring noise, at first I thought it was the tires on some particular tarmac, but could it be the diff? how loud is a diff whine? and how can you tell if its the diff?

It doesnt do it all the time and I was in getting a wheel balance today, and the guy there told me that one of my rear tires is misshapen (im in he market for 2 new rear tires) so this made me think it could be the tire on certain grades of tarmac?

any info would be sweet?

cheers team.

A diff will normally be a high pitch constant whine like the sound of straight cut gears (in my experience anyway) and a whur when backing off. I doubt it would be the tyres.

It sounds like tyres/bitumen type. Will still do it with new tyres.

Yeah definitely road surface.. Are you driving across much open grade asphalt or concrete pavement (freeways)? They tend to make a horrible whining noise..

Not sure what surface consists of here in New Zealand but yea, its the first time ive owned a car with 18s on it also, so that prob makes a difference also.

Whineeeeeeeeee, ugh, just wanted a nice quiet car to carry my family in :D
