Im pretty sure I just came across a problem with the std :pooh: intercooler our cars come with.

I was talking to a mate outside of work warming the car up we talked a bit longer (1am about 18 degress air temp)...car was idling for about 10 minutes. After that I drove through a car park about 200 metres, got out at traffic lights, gave the car a bootfull in first gear...only to the speed limit of course and...I had no power!

Felt worse than stock.

Went on a freeway on ramp about 1km later and all power back car was pulling great.

Weird.

All I can think of is intercooler heatsoak from the radiator...its the only variable. I have never idled so long then planted the car.

Im changing the intercooler in the next few weeks (or a bit more) but now this has me thinking...is this common with all bar and plate coolers and why plazmaman keep talking about fast recovery? I understand the std one heatsoaks from compressed air heat but...I didnt know it heat soaked from idling - radiator heat then take soooo long to come down to temp...On a cool day?

I mean if im at the drags...its a hot day...and the thing heatsoaks...im likely to rip it off the front of the car on the spot and throw it at something! :censored:

Not to mention hot days stuck in traffic which is a common thing - want a good safety margin. I know most people arent that picky but :dontknow:

Im pretty sure this is what it was, anyone else have any experience with this?

Add more boost and the stock cooler struggtles more. Its definitely worth upgrading the stock cooler when you can.

When I had the stock cooler on a hot day it felt useless. It still ran 12.9 after an hour and half drive on a 30 degree day.

If the car was idling from cold @ 18deg ambient for 10mins, your lack of power wasnt caused by heatsoak.

Mmm...sounds like I gotta speak to my tuner. Felt delayed in throttle and big loss of power...felt to me the same as when you give the car 4 or 5 hits and power drops off

My cold side piping isn't so cold either when I've been idling for similar time. I dont think that is a problem seems logical for it to heat up when there is no air movement over the cooler for over 10mins being fed from a hot turbo + half the cold side piping is in a fairly warm/hot engine bay

read the intake air temps from computer to see how much heat these things pick up sitting in traffic. one moving it drops pretty quick.

Yeah it'll warm up a bit but if you are idling the turbo won't be feeding pressurized air into the engine either. A by product of pressurization is it creates heat. Hence the need for the intercooler.. The heat you feel on the cold side pipes while it isn't 'cold' it's a damn side colder then it would be if there was pressurized air flowing through it with no cooler attached.
