Cv Or Wheel Bearing

Hey guys, just had a bit of a look through the forum and couldn't find the info I was looking for...

I just bought a stock BF MkII XR6-t with 120,000km's on it.

The car was driving fine for probably 100km's, until I picked up a 2nd passenger (who sat in the back left seat) then when turning corners or accelerating hard, the rear left started to make a few clunks, sounds in time with the wheel going around... After the passenger got out, the car kept making the same noise for the rest of the night.

The car will also do it with a passenger sitting in the rear left going in a strait line. - Which I think eliminates the diff as a possible cause? Also the extra weight changing the angle of the CV joint could be making it noisy..?

I took the car for a drive the next day and I didn't hear the noise at all.

But then the next day after it was runnign fine, 1 passenger got in and it was doing it for the rest of the night again...

What I'm wondering is if I would have a stuffed CV on a stock 6 turbo? the car was an ex government car from Tamworth, so lots of highway k's I'm thinking, full service history, tyres show no signs of abuse... I don't think the car was flogged and it looks like its had an easy life soo far..

I jacked the car up on one side, got someone to sit in it with their foot on the brake, put the car into drive and slowly let go of the brakes... the car didn't move which I thought was maybe gonna happen (the reason the brake was let off slowly), so I went and listened to the wheel... its a bit rattly sounding as it turns, the other side is quiet. There is no play in the wheel at all so I'm thinking it might not be a wheel bearing?

So anyway, what do people think? when CV's brake can they become noisy or do they just let go and stop all power getting to the wheel?

How noisy? Is it a severe clunking noise or more of a low sort of thud? Had this problem is the missus's car and I thought it was a wheel bearing but it turned out to just be a rather severely buckled rim..

You can feel it going "clunk clunk clunk" when you sit in the back. It only happens after someone sits in the back, then it wont stop for the rest of the night even if the person gets out. Tonight, no one sat in the back left and the car was fine all night, didn't hear the noise once.

Your best bet is to probably take your mechanic for a drive in the backseat.. Is it something you can actually feel while driving? is there a vibration? or just noise?

Alternatively, if its caused by weight being applied in the rear of the car you could rip out the back seat, weld the doors up and register it as a 2 seater?

I'm gonna stick with recommending a mechanic. Unless anyone else jumps in with better advice?

Had a 'similar' problem and found the Shielding up the side of the Fuel Tank just touched the Bearing on the Tailshaft when it was 'unweighted'.

- I had hit something and bent the Shielding just enough to touch it when loaded!

- Worth a look!

- Just check for a wear mark..

Yeah you can definitely feel the clunks as the wheel goes around, its hard to describe but its so obvious... I could sorta imagine it being a roller bearing with a small metal shaving going around getting squished between the bearing and its outer casing... I thought that when I turned the wheel by hand that I'd feel it get stuck as it was going around, but when I went to try it, it turns freely...

The noise is loud enough to be heard bouncing back off buildings as you drive through the middle of Newcastle (high, close buildings)

Just sounds like the wheel would be getting stuck as it goes around...

I'll pull the rubber boot off the CV joints and see if there is anything obvious, I'm pretty sure it will be either a bearing or CV.
