BF 2's are, BF 1's are pretty much the same as BA's mechanical wise just more expensive. As your after a manual I'd be looking for the best overall car rather then a BF over a BA.

Redbook says a 2006 BF is worth 13.5-15.5k - so when you offer, know that is most likely what they have been offered for their car as a trade (dealers stick to Redbook like superglue!). So you know then how much extra $$ the private seller is hoping for.......

I agree with Dillz, get a better overall car no matter if BA or BF, these cars are getting fairly old now and one that hasn't had a hard life would be the better car.

Yeah, definitely going to buy a car in good nic.. Going to take my mechanic with me to check it out when I go to inspect a few and get one that's been looked after! was just curious if there was a huge difference between the BA's and BF's..

So basically just going to look for one in good nic that's a 6spd manual, and it should be happy days :)

I paid $1000 for my first car (1972 XA Falcon in 1991),

What is the world coming to... anyway, test drive a lot of turbos then bargain like crazy. Look for low kilometres, long rego and log book servicing history. If you settle for one, have it inspected (especially all suspension bushes/driveline and make sure the brakes/tyres are 100 percent). Let the forum know when you narrow down a car for further advice or even come on a cruise to talk about the pitfalls.

In my case, I was new to T's, so after test driving a dealer's stock BA XR6T to get the feel, I narrowed it down to a 70,000km, 300 RWKW 2003 BA model private sale and got it for a song. The upgrade had been done a month ago, so all the receipts were there. After 18 months of ownership it has opened up an all new hobby, seen me spend a fair penny on essential fixes (diff bush/major service/minor repairs including a door lock actuator) but all been worth it. Mine's an auto and thoroughly enjoy it, but if you're sold on a manual go for it. A quick look at carsales reveals 215 private sale T's (65 manuals) under 20,000 so if you target anything under 60,000km for $15,000 you're doing really well.

Good luck and remember, it'll cost a lot to run, service and insure but will guarantee a smile on your face everytime you bury your right foot (and a sub-thirteen quarter mile with 300 RWKW on street tyres).

Thanks for the advice, it really helps! much appreciated.. had my heart set on this for a while. Yeah im set on a manual, its all ive ever owned and being so young I dont think you'll catch me in an auto for a few years! and I really do want it to become a hobby for me, and I really want to get into it myself as much as I can and learn about the car and so on so forth without babbling on to much... Im willing to put some coin away for repairs and modding and all the rest, and id love to tag along on any cruises, hopefully ill be at the next one sporting my first T!

Brilliant mate.

Be aware though that the auto is a faster beast in these cars (unlike other cars like WRXs etc) so you pay a price for a manual choice, even if its more fun! (which is manual for sure, as I did until the T) :beerchug:

I was in a similar position. The price of BAs (@ $12-14K for everything from stock to 300rwkw) was so attractive, but after doing some research, I decided it was worth spending the extra cash on a BF. Ideally something made after June 06 for the better typhoon internals, but even the early BFs are better than the BAs, with bigger brakes and ZF 6 speed (I wanted an auto).

I kept an eye on prices and when something came up for (what I thought) was a good price I jumped on it. From a dealer I ended up getting a July MkI BF (so typhoon engine), 110km (more than I really wanted), full log books, owned by an older lady, tow bar, prem sound, reversing sensors and elect pedals for $17.5K. Even privately I think that's a reasonable price, but from a dealer meant there were a few other bonuses, like he paid transfer duty, its got a years warranty and for roadworthy it just had new tyres put on and the diff bushes replaced (old ones are apparently something to look out for).

Very happy with my purchase and love driving it. Not as quick or agile as my old car (350kw subaru), but much nicer to cruise around in and still fun when you put your foot down.

My advice is 2-fold: buy the newest model you can afford and also that if you intend on modifying, buy one that is already done. That way you let someone else lose money on the mods.
