Yet Another Heater Not Working....but Not Typical?

The heater on my BF (2005) XR6T auto stopped working suddenly last week.

I've checked the mixer shaft and it rotates on the driver's side (so not snapped at the passenger side where they usually go)

I pulled the heater hoses off and there is free flow through the core.... but...

When running, the heater hoses in the engine bay at the firewall don't get hot. There's a little hose which comes off one of the heater hoses at a T piece, and that does get hot. The hoses to and from the heater core are luke warm at best.

I read somewhere about a transmission thermostat causing this as well- has anyone else heard of this? possibly in the external cooler for the auto tranny?

I guess another possibility is the heater flap has come away from the mixer shaft... but of course I'll only see that when the dash is out...

Thoughts?

HIM module maybe?

You still have to pull the dash out to fix it, which kinda sux.
