It's like calling an African American "boy" (re: Bert Newton to Ali years back). You just don't do it.

She wouldn't have known it was a racial slur which I think is part of why he made such a big deal out of it. Just because you don't mean something in a racist way doesn't mean it isn't perceived that way. If she had called Travis Cloke an ape everyone would have laughed with her.

It might be political correctness gone mad but that's just how it is these days.

Nothing wrong with pure debate fluffy. Nor is there anything wrong with difference of opinion. As long as it stays on topic and people are polite and respectful of each other and their opinions.

For me if it was just ape. Then I do t think its racial and once again an over hyped political media sh*t storm over nothing has once again ensued.

Wow tab I expected better of u of all people

And there it continues...why are you trying to belittle me?

I honestly had no idea, have never heard of it before used or taken as racial abuse. Perhaps the dialect is remarkably different down the arse end of the country.

I understand what your saying about political hype... I do agree on some level.. But at the same time that's the society we live in... And sometimes u just have to understand that...

Personal the way I look at it.. If that was my 13 year old daughter would I have clipped her round the ear for being a rude little sod regardless of whether she was talking to a black person or a white person ??? Yes

The fact she said what she did to who she did was made an example of ... Call it too much political correctness if u like but racism in sport should not be tolerated... If we tolerate "racial slurs" where do we draw the line... Throwing bottles at the players too!?

Afl is, in comparison to other sports in other countries, a well behaved and mature sporting event that families can enjoy...

The afl don't want that to slide.

I totally agree with it because I wanna be able to take my family to the game in 10 years and not feel like I'm at a pub brawl with sh*t being slung everywhere.

Oh tab I see the way u edited your post...

your original quote was far less tasteful than the one that's there now.

Difference of opinion call it whatever u want.

Ill leave it there as he words "healthy debate" don't come into it when arguing with immature people.

I removed the second line immediately and before anyone else posted as although it was in jest with an emoticon I didn't want it to be twisted out of context. It seems you're taking care of that for me anyway.

So is it OK for someone to heckle at all? Call a player a useless bastard? Or tell the blind *beep* of a ref to put his glasses on?

If they want people to sit there in silence then just say that...don't hide behind faux outrage over something stupid and pathetic.

I guess there's a line that morally doesn't need to be crossed... If a player came out as a homosexual then is it ok to slur him based on his sexual preference?

I guess there's a line where "your supporting" and a line where "your abusing someone's choice to be themselves"

I personally think the comment crossed that line.

That's all

You raise a very good point, what about calling a straight player a *beep*? That's commonplace but should be met with the same level of outrage shouldn't it?

I guess... It is a fine fine line... Now days the term "ohmo" is not thought about it the same context as it once was ... Does that make it ok? I don't know...

I personally don't use the term around my homosexual friends as I don't want to cause offence but most of them don't care ...

Political correctness is one of those things... It's never a clear cut case I don't think.
