Rough Idle, Engine Mounts Or Low Idle?

hi guys,

I understand that rough idle is pretty common on the ba turbos but cant help but think mine is a bit worse than the ordinary rough idle.

When mine is in drive and I am idle, vibration can be felt through the whole cabin and I can see the drivers side rear view mirror shaking as well. When in neutral everything seems ok.

I was told this could be engine mounts, around $1200 to replace through Ford or low idle. A mechanic that drove my car said my car is idling at around 500 where it should be at around 700rpm. Dont really want to spend $1200 if it isn't going to fix the issue.

Has anyone had any experience with this, either resolving it by replacing mounts or adjusting the idle?

I had the throttle body cleaned about a year and a half ago so would it need to be cleaned that soon after?

I had the battery out the other day and issue still persists so unfortunately that's not the problem.

Hey mate,

Yeah definitely try to clean your TB again. At worse, all you've done is try the cheapest option first. Just use some carby cleaner and give it a good clean.

Also put a bottle of fuel treatment through the car. I honestly don't know how good they are, but they are supposed to clean out the fuel system and make it more efficient. I did 3 or 4 things at once when my car had the rough idle, so I can't comment on how good an individual part was.

Not saying that any of these are your problems, but I did the TB, cleaned out the air filters, spark plugs, fuel treatment and ignition coils. (Coils were more for the failing power under load)

Mine was so bad that it would 'bottom' out at the lights when I pulled up. The revs would drop off and it would just turn off...

How many KM's has your car got? Year? Mods?

I had a vibration at idle an it finally got worse to the point where it felt like my clutch was stuffed, shuddering/vibrating on normal takeoff.. also felt as if the idle was low. Ended up being the drives side engine mount totally stuffed! $1200 seems a bit steep though.

I'll have to go through the same list you did Dan, mine's copping bad idle from time to time now, mainly after urban start stop driving. Was yours consistent?

Yeah Steve,

It was a little on and off, but the revs would drop almost every time I stopped. Especially at the bottom of first gear as it returned to 'idle' revs.

Would just drop and the car would turn off... I also found as it got hot, like you say, it was worse... Dunno why though.

Just to recap, I did;

New NGK spark plugs

Cleaned Air filter

Cleaned Throttle body really well

Fuel treatment

Disconnect/Reconnected battery (After a few hours)

After that the idle stayed very consistent and didn't bottom out. Power was a lot more linear as well and along with the boost solenoid clean, it fixed all of my issues. Without the plugs, will set you back all of $20 and however long it takes to do! :spoton:

Chad, give these things a go mate and if they're no good then try the engine mounts. The TB causes all sorts of issues when it's gunked up...
