Just thinking of the actual question...

Surely it would be fairly simple to make a circut that flip-flops the function of the T/.C switch, such that it turns the T/C off when the ignition is turned on, and then activates the T/C when the button is pressed.

Make the overide button nice and clear and whenever someone who should have a normal T/C function is driving just overide the override ;)
