Venom, you are so right its not funny! they also made one called a syclone (spelt like that!).

Hows this though...Ford made a tractor in 1957 called a typhoon...& apparently edsel made a boat of the same name in 1929...

So I guess there is some sort of weird heritage going on...

Typhoon is a GREAT name for a Ford branded car

The Mustang was originally called a Mustang, not after the horse, but the WW2 Fighter plane powered by the V12 Rolls Royce Merlin (originally a V12 Allison but the aircraft was upgraded to the Merlin)

The Cobra was also named after a fighter plane, the A22 (I think) AirCobra

The Typhoon is also the model of name of a fighter plane. If my memory serves me correctly, the Typhhon was made by Hawker de Havilland and it was a Fighter/Tank Buster.

Fast Fords have traditionally been named after aircraft (The Falcon spings to mind)

Mercury had the Mercury Cyclone and later the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler, which were big block powered muscle cars and also run successfully in NASCAR

I think the name is totally appropriate and I'm pleased someone has a bit of passion for the brand to follow tradition in some aspects of motor vehicle marketing.

Regardless, it is just my opinion, it is neither write nor wrong.

I don't have a problem with the name - agree with plonky.

However it is stressed to be just a concept car and like the Predator it may be not produced.

As has been pointed out 280 kw for $55,000 is not all that flash when you can throw the ten large at aftermarket mods on a standard T and get better power.

However, if the $55,000 included a stronger gearbox, maybe a T56 say, then it might be good value.

Plonky you are correct on the heritage but the the designations are a bit out.I actually hadn't drawn the fighter/ford link before but now you have pointed it out!

The Bell Air Cobra was a P-39 that was rather inadequate against the Zeros in the Pacific to say the least so the yanks gave them ALL to the russians under lends lease where some Russian Aces scored over 80 Kills!

The Mustang was originally a British design that the yanks basically pinched, the Allsion engine was produced under license from Rolls Royce and interestingly in return Allsion (Packard Aero Engines) supplied Rolls Royce with a design for a V8.This V8 is the recently superseeded Mystical Rolls Royce V8 used from about 1955 on!

The Typhoon is the interesting one however, with it originally being an UltraHeavy armed fighter/bomber. It was very effective and in some ways an unsung hero, with nowhere near the exposure of the Spitfire or even Hurricane. Lets hope we can see some of the features of this little ripper in the FPV6! Originally it ran as a protoype with a 2400HP Napier Sabre engine, max speed of 435MPH and the handy part of 4x20mm Cannons or dual 40mms and 8 Rocket Projectiles!

The Typhoon was a Hardhitting, fast and manourverable thing to come up against and consequently, as Plonky pointed out it is an Ideal name for what will hopefully be a devastating FORD FIGHTER!

Wonder if the name has anything to do with..........BIG blow!!!

Personally it's a Falcon based car.....should have kept with the raptor names, or just the T6 or whatever. :banghead:

I like the quote in today's Age motor section about the FPV Turbo being the "worst kept secret" in some time.

Sounds sensational, and should sell very, very well. I think if Ford can sort out the driveline gremlins, it will be an awesome car.

PS. I'm particularly interested to see where it'll be priced. With the current T at a base price of approx $46K, the XR8 at $51K and the GT at about $61K, I assume it will slot in at around $55K or thereabouts. The only problem with this is that it really leaves the XR8 out in the cold, as it will be more than a match for the GT, and would flog the XR8 in terms of performance. For'd $50-60K pricing range will be pretty crowded soon!!!
