Hang on a minute....

weren't we all getting our BTR transmission shift parameters changed as a part of a $1,000 custom tune for years, then SCT went and axed our Xcal 1 boxes, forcing us to upgrade to xcal3, with the promise that they'll soon be able to tune our ZF transmissions but only with the XCAL 2 & 3 boxes?

Now they'll be charging an extra $500 to tune the transmission on top of $1k for a custom tune.

Am I missing something?

In that case I'd ask what the labour difference is from the BTR tuning to the ZF tuning time wise for the tuner, possibly factor in the cost of the training day for the tuner as well?

If it takes considerably longer for the tuner to create his ZF tune baselines/customs then fair enough. If it's comparable to what it took to get the BTR tuning going I'd be concerned.

From what I've seen of the variable list though...it's loooong.

A ZF transmission tune is completely different to an engine custom tune. They could not previously do tuning of the ZF till recently. Herrod have spent countless hours perfecting these tunes. The numerous parameters and thousands of calculations can now be accessed through the latest software, which was not achievable previously. They have done the hard work, blown up ZF gearboxes in the process to show what you shouldn’t do when tuning these babies.

Anyway, the tune is separate from what you’re referring to and shouldn’t be confused with what was available. What is available NOW is a complete ZF gearbox tune! $500 (which quite possibly may drop in price over time) for the numerous changes that not only gives the gearbox a greater lifespan but I wouldn’t be surprised if it does take close to half a second off ¼ mile times. There are numerous benefits discribed in post one.

As someone who has had this done, I can honestly say it is amazing how this tune has refined something we all know doesn’t need much more refining. But for those who know the areas we’d love improved regarding the ZF, it is NOW finally achievable!!! :spoton:

From what I've been told, tuning the ZF is a complicated process and isn't a quick 5 minute job like the BTR was. Takes almost as long as a full engine tune...hence the price.

Also just to clarify, Herrod never mentioned you could tune a ZF with XCAL 2, it was only XCAL 3.

Goes back to one of the fundamentals with tuning using SCT (or anything really), does every tuner start from scratch with a blank file for every single tune they do?

As an analogy, when you buy a computer do you pay for a software engineer to sit down and write code for each physical computer or is there a bit of copy and paste going on then tweaked for individual requirements?

Probably upset a few but it stinks of price setting/collusion to me. Same as if anyone discounts the Xcal 3 their supplies mysteriously dry-up.

I'll find out next week. Won't be paying $500. In a year, once generic files have been created, I suspect it will be half that - or less.

It would've cost a fortune to get this up & running. If they sell tunes for $50 they would take a long time to get their money back.

To compare, a set of rear tyres costs more than $500 & they don't last long.
