Velvet Glove Team Blueprint Member 532 Member For: 22y 27d Posted 22/11/03 12:29 PM Share Posted 22/11/03 12:29 PM Your plate will tell someone what state you're in and identify your car. If you, for e.g., said you had modified your car, had a new stereo/GPS setup etc etc and someone found that was appealing to pinch, if you had said you lived in Canberra for example (on your signature), mentioned in other posts that you lived in Braddon, then a thief would be far more likely to be able to know what car to pinch if its identified by its rego. That and some people have 'mates' who will access others rego details through RTA computers etc so as to pin point the vehicles location. If you cover up your rego then they may have a rough area you live in but next to no chance of finding the car unless they are very lucky. In the past, in Sydney, certain people who live in the inner west of Sydney have had their mates in RTA offices either issue bogus registration documents for cut/shut vehicles (I.e. stolen) or accessed the private info to locate cars. They saw rego ABC123 on the street, thought 'I'd like to pinch that', then got the details from their 'mates' and lifted it.With a nice car like an XR6T sometimes it doesnt pay to advertise if you dont have secure parking.I think I explained it didnt I ??Cheers Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/7592-so-whats-with-it/page/2/#findComment-67053 Share on other sites
XR64T Are we there yet? Donating Members 703 Member For: 21y 7m 8d Gender: Male Location: Sydney, NSW Posted 22/11/03 01:10 PM Share Posted 22/11/03 01:10 PM Had my previous car (V8 VX Calais) stolen from the driveway of my house during the night when it was only six months old. I was very suspicious at the time because the stories were that the newer Calais security was yet to be overcome, however it was drivin way from my driveway. There were a couple of points that added to this which I mentioned to the coppers at the time:1. Was in for a small smash repair fixup less than 2 weeks before the theft.2. My wife thinks she heard it drive away less than half an hour after I switched off the lights and went to bed.3. Anytime the car was not left in the garage I made sure that the additional Holden "deadlocking" function was enabled that means the doors can only be opened using a remote keypad (inserting a key in the lock, even a valid key, will set off the alarm).I found out after this that it is possible to program most new cars to accept additional keys / remotes (including the Falcons). I now clear all programed keys and reprogram the ones I have every time my car is left with anyone I don't know (such as servicing). Can't be too careful these days and I don't want to have to go through that headache again. Insurance covers most of the cost, the inconvience is a real pain (particularly waiting for payment because it has not been recovered). Seems like a flaw in the design of the smartlock system to me. QLD has just started the register and funny enough the first car to go on it was a 100 series cruiser my partner and I wrote off (almost me with it to). Those cars were getting 20 grand at auction for the purpose of rebirth now it went for 6. Velvet Glove Team Blueprint Member 532 Member For: 22y 27d Posted 23/11/03 11:10 AM Share Posted 23/11/03 11:10 AM No wrecked car register but you just have to go to an auction in western Sydney and look at the people who are placing winning bids on the wrecks of 'stripped' WRX's etc. There are generally no other bidders as they get threatened by these individuals. They then refit the stripped wreck they have bought with the stuff they stripped out of it when they stole it and voila !! A brand spanking virtually new Rex at the cost of the shell. On top of that they cut the VIN numbers out of cars that have been totalled (when they buy them for bugger all at the auctions), steal another car of the same year model and cut the VIN out of it, then replace it with the VIN plate of the wreck. When they go to register it they explain it away as a complete repair of the thing that was totalled. You can check to see if the VIN has been removed (wont tell u how) but the methods are ingenious that these people use Link to comment https://www.fordxr6turbo.com/forum/topic/7592-so-whats-with-it/page/2/#findComment-67334 Share on other sites
